The holiday toll reached 274 with 184 traffic deaths and 90 non traffic fatalities including 35 fires and 51 misc incidents. Former Columbus City Man Dies in Florida
A former Columbus City resident Reu ben A. Oates 67 died Saturday December 29 in Holy Cross Hospital Fort Lauderdale Florida. His body will reach Stacy Funeral Home Columbus Junction Tuesday evening with funeral plans pending. He was born September 7 1895 near Columbus City served in World War I and was a Masonic Lodge member. Survivors include his wife Lucille a son Jack a daughter Jean Mann three grandchildren two sisters.

Four Die in Iowa Farmhouse Fire After Christmas Tree Burst
A Christmas tree caused a blaze at a Cedar Rapids area farm home killing Mrs Laura Eiker her two daughters Barbara and Debbie and Cindy Shra der a family friend. Husband Harry Eiker is in fair condition with burns and shock. Firemen fought the blaze through the night with crews from Coralville West Branch and Lone Tree. Authorities suspect faulty wiring on the tree lights sparked the fire during a family dinner gathering.

A fierce blizzard dumped up to four feet of snow across northern Maine and New Hampshire, with winds to 75 mph and 15 to 20 foot drifts. Temperatures plunged to 41 below on Mt.
