Former Policeman Convicted of Larceny in Des Moines
Former Des Moines police officer Martin B Brightman Jr aged 25 received a maximum five year term in the Anamosa Men's Reformatory for larceny after stealing a $102 suit from a Des Moines cleaning establishment earlier this year. He posted $2,500 appeal bond and was released pending appeal by the Iowa Supreme Court. Fire destroys long time Sumner business building
Sumner Iowa suffered about $50,000 damage as a 75 year old wooden building burned Friday. Twenty five volunteer firefighters and two pumpers battled the blaze but could not save the Bowling Land and Cattle Company offices. The two story structure also housed Harold's Shell Service Station and a garage with trucks from Reuters Freight and a Sumner Bakery delivery truck among other equipment.
