Engineer John Van Ess plowed the Chicago and Alton passenger train into the rear of mail train No 78 in a blizzard at 37th Street and Albany Avenue Chicago. Within two hours about forty people were injured and a woman trapped in a coach was reported dead.

Opposition to an early Republican convention to pick delegates for the national meeting in Kansas City is growing. Leaders across Iowa plan a state convention in late January or early February to avoid a ticket of state officers riding the wave of support for former Illinois governor Frank O. Lausden.
Washington Dec 31 Senator Norris chairman of the judiciary reports the bill for an additional federal judge in Iowa will be reported out of committee soon after the holidays. Representative Green also expects early action in the house. With the Iowa delegation united behind Judge Charles A Dewey the president is predicted to appoint him promptly when the bill passes.
Washington County Chautauqua Association members met in the Y building and formed the 1928 program. Frank R. Sage elected president Hugh H. McCleery vice president Elizabeth Dawson secretary and M Keck treasurer. Sessions set August 14 to 23 with a full ten day program and season ticket sales strong.

The Big Y basketball squad sponsored by the Y M C A will face the Brighton Independents Monday evening in a fast contest.
