Liddy weighs hiring more Iowa meat inspectors

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture L B Liddy faces a major decision after a new federal meat inspection law. The state may need many more full time veterinarians and lay inspectors if inspectors must be present at slaughter. Existing facilities include 741 licensed plants with 690 red meat and 51 poultry plants, plus 12 small interstate plants. The size and scope of responsibilities could force structural changes at plants and possible Iowa law amendments for retail or custom operations.
