Iowa Taxpayers association reports operating costs for the state’s schools rose by 2,008,415 to 24,812,979 for the 1946 fiscal year ending June. Expenditures in 113 city districts with high schools totaled 22,747,008, up from 21,007,144. Per pupil costs rose in some districts while several high and low districts are listed with specific averages.
The union’s first winter service at United Presbyterian in cold weather heard Rev Don McClure report on Sudan mission work. He described Mohammedan influence, witch doctors, native converts, famine and plague relief efforts, urging stronger faith and readiness for mission openings. The Missouri supreme court ordered 122 major fire insurance companies fined a total of 2 090 000 for attempting a fraudulent settlement in a rate case tied to alleged bribery of Tom Pendergast. The matter arose from a 10 000 000 impounded settlement overcharges, with anti trust and rating statute violations noted.
The Fort Dodge school board plans a complete renovation of the district school plant with additions and several new elementary schools at a total cost expected to exceed 1,000,000 dollars. Work is not set to begin before 1945 and the Des Moines firm Keffer and Jones has the drafting contract.
The AFL backed a drive for federal and state legislation to require public school teachers be paid at least 2500 dollars per year and to cap class sizes at 25. The national council urged affiliated groups to push the measure, saying living wages are needed to keep teachers in the profession and curb overcrowding linked to crime and delinquency.

A mile south of Riverside a pickup driven by Cleo Buriel was side swiped and nosed into a ditch. no injuries and minimal damage.
The Washington Methodist Church hosts its annual watch night service Tuesday at 11 30 PM as part of a national New Year observance. The service features organist John Yousling, a candlelit communion led by Dr. Miller with Rev. Walter A. Smith and stewards, and invites members of other community churches.

Dowell longtime trainman 1881 1929 born Nov 1 1861 in Van Buren county married Nov 3 1880 to Cora Dascon celebrated 60th wedding anniversary this year. Survived by wife three grandchildren two great grandchildren. three sons preceded in death.
Des Moines reports 1946 gasoline tax collections total $25.28 million, up from $19.62 million in 1944. December 1946 receipts reached $2.462 million with $640,965 from an extra one cent tax. The one cent trust fund stands at $7.611 million, with $7.058 million from 1946.
Rep. Harold Knutson Minnesota incoming Ways and Means chairman says a 70 percent cut in personal income taxes will be introduced and placed on the house floor by January 27. He argues revenues will hold with reduced spending and debt payoff, while opponents urge restraint until the budget balances.
Susanna Emry 76 of Pleasant Plain died Saturday night after a period of illness at her home. Born April 30 1870 in Jefferson County she lived in Pleasant Plain for 50 years and was the last of her family. Funeral arrangements were incomplete awaiting word from a distant relative. She is survived by nieces and nephews including Austin Emry and Oscar Westenhave. Swisher funeral services were held for another Brighton resident, Mrs Swisher, at Hoskins funeral home with burial in Hill Crest cemetery.
