Iowa celebrated its centennial as a state on December 28 marked by a history of migration from Ohio and Europe, growth from farming to industry, and leadership in agriculture. Gov Blue projected major changes and urged natives to stay for opportunity in a still developing Iowa.
United Press reports a nationwide rush to bargain counters as stores cut prices 3 to 50 percent on suits dresses shoes furs and household goods with some items at cost Food cuts were limited to butter eggs meats and canned citrus. Experts cite overbuying post Christmas inventory and wartime item clearance as reasons while economist Melchair Palyi notes continued overall price pressure though luxury goods and farm equipment see easing.
Leaders of United Presbyterian churches and laymen expressed strong support for creating a home for aged people in Washington. Plans hinge on Iowa synod in Washington and Illinois synod mail poll. Mrs. Frank Swisher a longtime Brighton resident died at 7 35 this morning at her brother James Whisler's home in Bloomfield Following the couples move to the Whisler home in November due to illness She was born in Brighton to Alfred and Eliza Knerr Whisler and married Frank Swisher May 19 189 They had six children one son deceased Surviving relatives include daughters Mrs Blizmak and Mrs Eliza L ips hy of Houston sons Howard Rock Island Mac Chicago Marcus Beaumont Texas a number of grandchildren sisters Mrs Roy Edwards Iowa City and Mrs Ella Brier Long Beach Calif brothers James Whisler Bloomfield George California and Doe Albuquerque Funeral services and burial will be in Brighton.
Washington county assessor held their annual meeting at the ecourt house yesterday receiving supplies and instructions for 1938. They will start after January first to assess taxes with only personal property to be assessed next year. Four assessors are new Claude Essley A A Richardson Thomas E Jones and Charles S Custer.
In Philadelphia a $200 million portal to portal pay suit was filed in U S District Court against Bethlehem Steel Corp and its parent Bethlehem Steel Co. by more than 20 locals of the United Steelworkers on behalf of 13,000 workers at 25 plants. The petition seeks 100 million for actual overtime and 100 million for punitive damages. Allis Chalmers Suit filed in South Bend for 11 million against the company on behalf of 3,400 workers at La Porte Indiana and Springfield Illinois.
Leonard Markman aged 36 of Renwick died from injuries after an auto accident last night on his way to his wedding in Alguna.
U S Conciliation commissioner Howard Plank announced a meeting of truck operators and leaders from two unions to avert a city wide strike set for Jan 2. The session aims to bring together employers group with about 1200 trucking firms and officials from the International Brotherhood of Teamsters AFL and the Chicago Truck Drivers Union Independent.
Kossuth County authorities report Markman died when his car skidded while passing another vehicle en route to Madeira Minnesota for his wedding and crashed into a truck.

Duncan of the State and Fox theaters announced the New Year’s Eve custom returns after a two year lapse. Both theaters open with 11:30 pm showings featuring Judy Canova in Singin in the Corn and a program of shorts.

Senator Homer Ferguson urged reopening the Bilbo investigation until all testimony is recorded. He sought hearings with an alleged Mississippi addict and two doctors connected to a $1000 plus payoff claim. Ferguson planned to subpoena witnesses but couldn’t reach the subcommittee chair. He stated the delay won’t change his report urging Bilbo’s denial of his Senate seat.
An eastbound Southern Railway passenger train collided head on with a freight train at Auburn seven miles east of here on December 28. Initial reports said only a few persons were injured.
The TWA Star of Cairo crashed on a mud island in the Fergus River near Shannon airport in Ireland during an attempted emergency landing from Paris. Ten passengers and three crew members died among 14 aboard. 12 fatalities total with 83 aboard earlier reports. Rescue teams faced marshy terrain and debris as flames shot high from fuel tanks.
An American Airlines jet suffered engine trouble and crash landed in a flower garden at Michigan City Indiana. The pilot Captain Frank Hamm Jr and co pilot Harmon E Ring of Chicago died. Twenty one aboard included three crew.
