The Iowa department of agriculture reports butter rationing increased oleomargarine demand. Iowa oleomargarine sales rose from 2,842,922 pounds in 1942 to an estimated 4,900,000 pounds this year.
Fort Dodge sells eight deer from city parks as the deer market booms. Parks Commissioner C. B. Pilcher said eight of the 24 herd have been sold this week, including two to Henry O. Hale and six to a deer farm in Jackson Wisconsin.
Herbert Ek Waples, 69, a farmer near Sioux City, died Friday from injuries suffered five weeks earlier when knocked down and trampled by a cow. A resident of Iowa for 65 years, he moved to Sioux City 29 years ago from Castana.
DES MOINE S Gov Bourke B Hickenlooper announced he will resign Wednesday morning eight days before his term ends to join the United States senate when the seventy ninth congress convenes. Robert D Blue becomes acting governor a week early and will be formally inaugurated January 11.
A Clinton Strand theater fire caused serious damage to the stage and sound gear. A janitor found the blaze at about 7 am, tracing to a storeroom and feeding upward through the stage into the fly area. The theater had posted Friday’s schedule before closing.
Des Moines dispatch notes ration conscious residents in Waterloo and Cherokee rushed to coffee shelves on Friday. OPA officials had no information on adding coffee back to the ration list after stores reportedly emptied supplies.
In Des Moines a 45 year old divorcee Mrs Cecil Caskey shot and fatally wounded her former husband and killed his bride of under a day before killing herself. The victims were in the Mayflower apartments at 1424 Locust street.
CHICAGO December 30 Avery chairman of Montgomery Ward strode into his office well ahead of army officers sent to operate Ward plants under a presidential seizure order in seven cities The appearance raised the possibility of an early showdown over who would run Ward facilities Avery remained secluded after the seizure while a Ward vice president resisted army requests to access company books without his consultation
The Office of Price Administration announced no further red or blue food ration stamps will be invalidated until at least March 1. No termination date is set for red or blue stamps validated for December, and they will not be invalidated in January or February.
Charles Helfrich of Washington began a 30 day jail term after sentencing by Justice J E Bovee for disturbing the peace. Gene Jennings was fined five dollars on intoxication charges by Justice W S Eldridge.
Eight persons died in a Columbus Indiana residence fire early today. Victims included five children ages four months to nine years. The frame house was destroyed and the flames trapped them in their beds.
Marriage licenses were issued yesterday afternoon and this morning to Alvin D. Miller and Laura Kuhns, both of Wellman, and to Walter L. Jackson of Kalona and Adelia Haller of Washington.
