In Lee county Iowa farmers using shells from the conservation commission killed 80 ducks in a bid to frighten the flock rather than reduce numbers. Conservation officers were present and the ducks will be sent to veterans hospitals.
A Thursday fire in De Witt wiped out 29 automobiles and damaged the Hi Way Motor Co garage. The loss was about 50 000 with part insured. Three cars were new. the rest awaiting repairs. Firemen braved near zero temps to shield nearby buildings. Owners C H Andersen ran the garage. L E Shuh owned the building. Cause unknown. De Witt lies about 15 miles west of Clinton.
DES MOINES Governor Bourke B. Hickenlooper plans to resign before January 11 to take the U S Senate seat in time for the new session. Lieutenant Governor elect Robert D Blue would automatically succeed him and be sworn in January 11. Blue plans to be in Des Moines January 2 with Hickenlooper’s resignation tied to seniority and oath timing.
The Rev. Ross Mills aged about 60 from Green Mountain Iowa died Thursday after a hospital stay in Marshalltown for throat ailment treatment. He led Green Mountain Congregational Church about 10 years and previously served 21 years at Wittenberg Congregational near Newton. Survived by his wife and son Milo of Omaha Nebraska. Services Monday at the Green Mountain Congregational Church with graveside burial at Newton.
The War Department announced consolidation of all WAC basic and military training at Fort Des Moines after training ends April 1 at Camp Oglethorpe Georgia. The Des Moines center will be the sole WAC training facility, as the Oglethorpe camp closes being the last of five expansion camps.
A tenant house on the Samm ens farm near Ainsworth burned this morning likely started in the upper floor from a chimney. Charles Norton, who lived there, escaped after returning to find the blaze rapid as flames consumed the staircase and upper rooms. neighbors and local fire squads fought the fire with little chance to save contents. Norton had no insurance for the home goods.

British and Greek troops launched a three pronged offensive against ELAS forces in southeastern Athens at dawn, advancing four hours later as the attack was reported going according to plan. This marked the second phase of a campaign to clear southern Athens of left wing ELAS troops.
By dawn a British prong moved toward the stadium area of southeastern Athens and another column entered the cemetery south of the stadium. A Greek force attacked from the east while mortars artillery and tanks backed the offensive. Spitfires patrolled rooftop levels to spot enemy movements. By 8 30 a.m. Greeks had gained about 1000 yards amid stiff resistance.
