Snow drifts stranded travelers as a Colorado blizzard marooned roads and hotels. In Iowa falling temperatures and winds raised the risk of blizzard conditions, with reports of power outages and blocked routes across several counties.
Two Washington churches outline New Year's Day dinners and meetings. Japanese forces seize Jaoyingho and push toward Chinchow as remnants of Marshal Chang Hsueh-liang’s army retreat from Manchuria. Chinese casualties mount in hand to hand fighting while rail bridges are burned in retreat and thousands are scattered across North China.
Des Moines reports Iowa collected 12,265,168.45 from the gasoline tax in 1981, the largest total since records began. Treasurer Ray Johnson notes rising travel from better roads boosted fuel use, with about 418 million gallons taxed and a total mileage projection exceeding six billion miles. December receipts declined from 1930 levels. Since 1925 Iowa's gasoline tax has yielded 58.8 million dollars.
Authorities warn that tomorrow evening ends the cutoff for 1932 car licenses in Washington County. A $1 penalty applies for late license issuance after January first, and driving without a current year license risks arrest. By 9 am 3,419 cars and 19 trucks had licenses for next year, with yesterday adding 319 more and a total of 3,371.

District Judge Atherton B. Clark upholds Tipton county farm bureau as a valid corporation and approves the appropriation granted by the county supervisors. The ruling confirms the bureau’s eligibility for funding and supports the county’s financial backing for the organization.
Mr and Mrs Burrell Reid and Mrs Harlan Krahl and daughter Bernice visited Golia Miller at her home yesterday and returned to Columbus Junction yesterday evening before the storm.
Professor Kenneth E Barnhart of Birmingham Southern College told scientists in New Orleans that the United States had the highest homicide rate. His survey found 12 000 homicides in 1929 across 31 American cities, with Chicago and New York ranking low among the 147 cities. He cited swift justice in England and Wales versus uncertainty here as factors and noted a slight U S increase in homicide rate over a decade.
A new storm neared the Pacific coast from the north as snow and rain continued to flood mountain passes and swelling rivers. Storm warnings were posted along the northern California coast and at the Puget Sound entrance in Washington, as the Northwest recovers from weekend gales.

While no rapid recovery is predicted, many foresee an upward tide after depressions. some hedge with ifs and buts, others profess confidence. Notable leaders such as Gerard Swope General Electric Harry F Sinclair Sinclair Consolidated Oil Alfred P Sloan Jr General Motors Thomas J Watson IBM and others offer varied views on gradual improvement and a turn toward better business in 1932.
Howard Mercery and his son Nick are due this evening from Iowa City to spend the weekend with relatives. Glenn Eldridge has traveled to Des Moines on business.
The Washington postoffice will be rated as a first class postoffice for another year despite a dip in Christmas mail. Nine days of the rush saw letters drop from 85 000 last year to 65 000 this year while parcel post declined about a third versus 1930. No mail will be delivered New Year’s Day.

Two men had left five parcels for parcel post to New York City before the blast, with one package killing Werckheiser and injuring John House and others. Preliminary police say the act may have anti fascist Italo American links.
