President Hoover called for coordination of government activities and reduction of overlapping bureaus and commissions in Washington. He urged congressional action, arguing that consolidating agencies would save taxpayers millions annually and mark a major achievement of the current congressional session.
Washington junior college and high school teams schedule New Year Eve games. Emmetsburg travels far to face the Cardinals, aiming to test a strong northwestern five near last year’s junior college champions. Reserve seats go on sale at McDaniel drug store after 5 pm Wednesday. High school coach Jim Shultz fields a squad planning Burlington tilt after two early Little Six losses.
Miss Helen Needles of the Bureau of Maternity and Infant Hygiene is due in Washington January 11 to organize prenatal care classes. The first sessions start in Washington and Riverside with more classes as demand grows, part of statewide health unit efforts gaining strong public interest.
Report from Peiping and Tokio dated December 29 describes Marshal Chang Hsueh-Liang withdrawing Chinese regulars from Chin chow while Japanese troops capture Panshan near the Peiping Mukden railway. Additional battles near Yingkow Tawa station and Hsinminfu indicate heavy fighting as Japanese push northwest from Hopei.
The Washington county court house buzzes with activity as residents flock for 1932 automobile licenses and drivers’ licenses. In two days, cars must display 1922 plates or risk arrest as assessors convene in the supervisors’ room to begin year end plans and training.

Women are invited to attend as the county health unit under Dr. H N Hendricks and Miss Hilke a Jacobs carries on a carefully outlined program.
Two bank robbers accuse Sheriff Ira Barton of aiding their crime in Blackford county Indiana. They say the gang was led by Frank Valentine and Loren Capelli and that plans allowed two Hartford City and Montpelier bank robberies. Barton was jailed for investigation after the Dunkirk incident and coroner W. W. Ayers detained him.
The Fortnightly club’s music department hosted a well attended program at the Presbyterian church last night. Miss Carolyn Hamilton organized the event showcasing county youth talent including piano vocal solos banjo and cello numbers. Paul Kennedy of Wellman performed a piano solo as an added number and a silver offering was collected after the program.
The county basketball league for adult teams from Washington West Chester Olds Crawfordsville Kalona and Brighton is planned for the season. Opening games begin next Monday at the Y M C A court with up to eight teams and no trophies. Volunteer unpaid officials will run the games to cut costs.
Washington report classifies unemployment and relief as fairy good in not more than ten states. Delaware and several Pacific coast, Rocky Mountain, New England and other states are tagged fairly good, the highest category. The survey of 48 states by Frank Bane for the Senate relief committee notes many states will need outside aid to meet relief needs, with Iowa among those believing it can handle its own problems.
Gandhi told Indian and European members of the India Welfare League in Bombay that nationalists would face bullets in a new campaign. He denounced recent ordinances as inhuman and warned cooperation with the Indian government may end due to the measures. He praised Sir Samuel Hoare as frank and honest in the British cabinet.
Secretary Leigh Soule said the Y M C A may form a checker team to challenge outsiders during the New Year open house. He expects to select top players that day and organize them for future matches. Interest from the Horseshoe Club, where checkers is popular in winter, is noted.
The drivers license department reports mailing 378,973 licenses as of December 29. The license law takes effect January 1. About half the expected applications have come in, with 734,000 received so far. The department estimates about 1.5 million applications will arrive.

Des Moines reports 1931 close to a mild winter with December temperatures averaging over four degrees above normal. The season may yield four fall months about six degrees warmer than usual, boosting pasture conditions and helping the unemployed and farmers save on feed costs. Snowfall remains light and dairy markets react to higher pasture output.
Der Wellman v Rev and Mrs T C Kennedy and son Paul and Mr and Mrs J C Miller escape serious injury after their Essex sedan flips on loose gravel south of Frytown. Mrs Kennedy pinned under car, rescued. all taken for medical aid in Wellman. Kennedy suffers minor facial injury, others shaken and bruised.
Ames De Molay chapter elected officers for the new year last night. Ray Minick was named master councillor, Keith Wilson of Wellman senior councillor, William Shannon junior councillor, Walter Wells treasurer and scribe. Other offices are appointive with installation set for January 11.
Iowa national guard units will undergo their annual federal inspection after the first of the year. Regular army officers will conduct the inspections at various times until May 31, starting with the headquarters company of the 57th cavalry brigade and the 118th cavalry led by Maj. Frank G. Ringland and Capt. Roland A. Isker. Mrs. S. P. Telford, ill for some time at 627 East Washington Street, is not so well.
A letter from Shanghai dated December 27 expresses longing for Christmas at home. The writer notes Chinese Christmas customs are unfamiliar, mentions Shanghai as a lively city, but laments the absence of a home Christmas tree and the shared homesickness felt by many stationed abroad.
Velma Stevenson aged 17 of Eldon Iowa died from pneumonia. She was the daughter of Mr and Mrs Clarence Stevenson and sister to four brothers. Her mother Velma Kaye was formerly part of the Kaye and Lytle grocery partnership. Funeral services are planned for Wednesday in Eldon.
Plan scout area officers and community workers for the ensuing year are announced. Area officers include A. B. Sidwell Iowa City president I. A. Opstad vice president J. H. Shipton vice president James L. Records vice president Fred Downing Washington vice president Thomas Farrell Iowa City treasurer and Rev F W Eastwood Washington scout commissioner. District and community chairmen are Fred S Downing district chairman J H Peet district vice chairman and Charles W Davis community chairman. Standing committees chairmen include Al Baldrige court of honor Henry Bailey camp J H Peet leadership training Orville Elder finance Richard McCleery troop organization Lewis Warren educational publicity and civic service D Chalmers Fulton reading. Washington county district committee includes these men along with district chairman and vice chairman and troop committee chairs. With such a complete organization scouting aims for greater progress next year.
Six men posing as deputy sheriffs terrorized Pine River for two hours from 3 a m seizing cash jewelry and valuables. They looted Horrigan drug and Hill hardware stores and held residents including Constable Houghward and Frank Marsh, driving toward Brainerd after locking victims in the Horrigan home.
Des Moines officers raided the Hotel Northwestern si nghtly in a move described as targeting a syndicate linked to liquor interests. Seven people were arrested and 21 guns plus a small amount of alcohol were seized during searches of all hotel rooms by county city and state officers.
Democrats will sponsor a bill for limited tariff revision in the current Congress, said by House Ways and Means Chair Collier. He stressed no general revision is planned, and changes will be selective after completing a tax bill probably in February. Party leaders said tariff and tax bills would be addressed next week.
