City police investigate a Tuesday afternoon robbery in which a teenager was knocked unconscious in an alley between Washington and Main Streets. The victim said two assailants, one wearing a ski mask, demanded money. a switchblade was brandished and a coat cut. Wallet missing about $9 to $10.
Washington city urges owners to keep vehicles off streets for long periods to avoid 24 hour street parking. Snow clearing crews report trouble from stored vehicles. Park off street when absent. Tickets may be issued to violators.
Many offices and businesses will close Monday January 2 for the New Year holiday. Post office service halts Sunday with no mail movement. no mail deliveries Monday though lobby open 2 to 4 pm. Mail sent 3:45 pm Monday. no incoming mail. Evening Journal prints at noon January 2.
Michael L. Grismore and Robert E. Clark were found guilty of unlawfully receiving jobless benefits while jailed in Lucas County. They mailed weekly benefit notices from the jail to verify eligibility, violating Iowa Employment Security Law which requires active job search and availability.
Heloise Bowles known for Heloise Hints died at Baptist Memorial Hospital in San Antonio at age 58. She had been treated for a heart ailment and her syndicated column appeared in nearly 600 newspapers, first launching in 1959 in the Honolulu Advertiser.
A subcommittee of the Paperwork Task Force will hold two public forums in Waterloo on January 17. Gov. Robert D. Ray said the event will let Iowans vent about government paperwork, suggest reforms for government business relations, and discuss U.S. economic development.
