Retail outlets in Washington will close at their usual time on New Year Eve and reopen Friday January 2. No evening shopping hours this week. Police were notified of a Sunday morning break in at Flickinger Minneman veterinary offices with cash stolen and drugs inventory to be checked.
In Washington on Sunday at 9 25 a m a minor collision on West Madison Street involved Robert G Hiller of Burlington in a pickup and Daniel W Stigers of Brighton in a car. Hiller charged with expired license Stigers with turning from a direct course. Damage totaled 1200 dollars. Separately sheriff deputies investigated two animal mutilations including a deer carcass in Riverside and an Angus calf found by hunters bearing knife marks.
Iowa marks 129 years and one day since admission as the first free state in the Louisiana Purchase on December 28 1846. The 56 147 square mile boundaries were set by a state constitution, with Ansel Briggs as first governor 1846 to 1850 and Stephen P Hempstead succeeding him through 1854. Since then Democrats have held the governor’s office only five times.
A tip to police led to a stakeout at Marvin Dorton’s home in Centerville Tenn. Early today two hooded men entered the house and were arrested on burglary and attempted kidnapping charges, identified as Danny Bowman 18 and George McCaleb 25.

McAvoy Charles manager of General Telephone operations in the Washington area will retire at year end after more than 38 years with local telephone firms. He began with Iowa Continental in 1937 as a temporary lineman and became a regular in 1938. He later held roles including wire chief and cable splicer.
India announced the United States and others will supply high capacity pumps to drain two flooded coal pits where a few hundred to as many as 900 miners are trapped at Chasnala. Officials expect at least 15 days to drain the pits and fear no survivors remain.
Four Petersburg Federal Reformatory inmates seized seven staff members and two inmates as hostages in the Vocational Training Building. They demanded talks with officials and were armed with homemade weapons. no injuries were reported as staff and FBI agents conducted talks.
R Sargent Shriver became the sixth candidate in Illinois March 16 presidential preference primary. Shriver supporters filed petitions with about 8000 signatures collected during Christmas week, exceeding the 3000 required. Other Democrats filing include George Wallace Fred Harris and Jimmy Carter. Ford and Reagan filed on the Republican ballot. Deadline was 5 p.m. today.
United Press International reports the four day Christmas holiday weekend killed 412 people, the lowest since 1961. NSC attributes declines to energy use, weather, 55 mph limit, and stronger enforcement. Texas led with 42 traffic deaths, Alaska and several states reported none.
President Ford enjoyed a ski morning in Vail Colorado with Penny Tweedy Billy Kidd and Henry Patty as he ends his Christmas vacation before returning to Washington Tuesday He will act on about two dozen post session bills and lists a State of the Union address for January 19 to outline his five year goals for the country.
The 3100-pound midnineteenth century safe traveled from Sigourney to the University of Iowa to become a feature in the Old Capitol Restoration Project. Donated by Curtis G. Updegraff, it was moved Dec 5 to Dec 12 with six men and a crane. Officials say it likely matches the 1840s Treasurer’s Office type and will contribute to the living museum opening on July 3 1976.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission rejected Los Angeles actions to ban fluorocarbons in sprays and as coolants on a 3-2 vote. Officials said evidence does not prove fluorocarbons threaten the atmosphere and ozone layer. Chairman Simpson supported the denial citing insufficient evidence.
Iowa State University economists argue assessment equalization is needed to keep property valuations and school funding fair across more than 2,000 taxing districts. They note statewide increases in agricultural 37 percent, residential 18 percent, and commercial 4.5 percent, and explain how uniform levies and state aid depend on equalized assessments.
