Shenandoah resident Marrell Snyder sues Clarinda resident George Peterson in district court over a bar rel of buttermilk that slipped during unloading. Snyder claims Peterson caused the barrel to slip injuring his thumb and causing permanent disability.
Democratic incumbent W. C. Hoth loses to Republican H. Nevermann of Tripoli by margin 156 after county recount. Final vote 3225 for Nevermann and 3069 for Hoth. original tally showed Nevermann ahead by 104.
Ethel Barrymore resumes work in White Oaks after Christmas break and will perform as a 101yearold grandmother. The same cast will bring the show to Des Moines Shrine Auditorium on January 9 after touring Minneapolis.
District Judge A B Lovejoy sustained Travelers Insurance Co motion requiring Mrs Marlon L Swisher widow of Benjamin F Swisher Jr to file a specific statement on the cause of her husband death May 10 1938. She sues on a 2000 policy issued Mar 16 1936 to the attorney. Similar motions by New York Life and Penn Mutual were overruled.
Iowa City report notes the fourth annual aquatic meet at Fort Lauderdale attracted swimmers from across the nation. Members of the Monday Morning Quarterbacks club, a local businessmen group, sent a package with ears of Iowa corn and Iowa song booklets to the University of Iowa swimming team in Florida.
District Judge L J Kirkland issued a permanent injunction allowing Leo Stegman to remain in the Marshalltown fire department after ten applicants named as intervenors contested his position. The order restrains city officials and the civil service commission from removal due to being slightly under the required weight.
In Des Moines preparations begin for the January 12 inauguration as changes from the new administration bring likely exits for many incumbents. Adj Gen Charles Grabl oversees ceremonies and directs inaugural planning from his office.
LANSING Conservation Officer George Kaufman reports the largest bald eagle flock in years, totaling 40 birds along the Mississippi River. The eagles were perched in trees and on ice.
A severe cold front was forecast to plunge northern Iowa to 25 below zero with 15 below in the southwest and 10 below in the southeast. Sioux City reported 18 below, while Des Moines hovered near freezing early today as farmers were urged to protect livestock.
Iowa State College dean H H Kildee told about 1,000 Iowa 4 H club members that farm tenancy mortgage indebtedness and World War era policies have caused waste of soil water and forests. He called for long term planning and praised conservation efforts while urging the youth to shape Iowa's future.
Cotter School in Des Moines area to receive improvements under a WPA project. Three WPA workers will be kept employed for the job. Lou W. Fitz, area engineer for Louisa and Des Moines counties, will supervise. Work includes painting brick walls, puttying and weatherproofing windows, interior painting, and landscape work. WPA allotment totals 1241 dollars for federal costs. the school district provides most materials and equipment.
Iowa observes a century of continuous weather records starting 1839 with Theodore Parvin’s Bloomington Muscatine diary use. The Des Moines Bureau collects data from 135 observers plus six primary stations in Charles City Dubuque Davenport Sioux City and Omaha and ships at sea. Observations include high and low temperatures rainfall snowfall wind direction and sky conditions.
Des Moines health report shows measles cases up twentyfold in the first 11 months of 1938 versus 1937. Other infections also rise like chicken pox typhoid fever diphtheria and meningitis, while influenza declines sharply from 8 855 to 208.
Alex Schlardaum 67 died at 10 45 yesterday at his home four and a half miles south of Brighton after a period of heart trouble and frail health since Thanksgiving. Funeral plans await a brother in law Ben Stortz of Pomona California. services likely at Germanville Lutheran church. He was born in Walnut township Jefferson county, lifelong in the area, son of John and Catherine Finn Schlarbaum and married to Josephine.
Two of three convicts who escaped from Mt. Pleasant Iowa were captured by Missouri highway patrols after a high speed chase. The pursuit ended east of Eureka Missouri when the stolen car was forced off the road. one man was shot in the head. The third escapee, Fred Hector of Ashton Iowa, was arrested in St. Louis. James McGhee alias Mc Gargy, 38, was wounded. Robert Shoemake, 27, has a Licking Missouri connection through his mother.
Des Moines reports that Treasurer-elect W. G. C. Bagley appointed Leslie B. Freese of Sioux City as his first deputy and Secretary of State-elect Far Miller named Rollo Bergeson, 28, of Sioux City as his deputy.
In Des Moines birds, sparrows and pigeons, feed on discarded corn kernels from moisture tests at the state agricultural conservation committee offices. About 50,000 samples have been tested, with 56,000 more expected to run through moisture machines as the program continues.
Six counties Appanoose Clarke Madison Marion Monroe and Van Buren will continue state aided medical support after January 1. Union will begin local relief funding then. Roy B. Martin of I E R A says the agency avoids the former Iowa Plan and counties hold legal responsibility for care.

Stortz survives with two daughters Mrs Royal Rubey living on the home farm and Mrs Otto Vorhies of Lockridge, five grandchildren and two sisters Ella at home and Mrs Etta Braun of Muscatine.
Seventy persons are now employed on six Works Progress Administration projects in Washington County. Total WPA and local spending reach 124 582 dollars with farm to market road work receiving the largest share. The program has repaired roads, built bridges and improved county buildings including the city hall and courthouse, with ongoing park enhancements and skilled labor limited.
The eleventh annual New Year open house at the Y and YMCA draws about 1000 attendees. Washington Municipal Band concert directed by Milo Sorden in the east lobby at 2 00 P M. Various gym events include basketball games, a five oclock volleyball match, and a Maidrites versus visiting team game. Exhibits and activities include stamp and camera displays, a checker tournament, swimming shows, and a tea for new community members.
J. E. White sues James and Edna Gardner for 3850 dollars claiming they assaulted him on their Lime Creek farm near Wellman Iowa last summer. A separate cross petition seeks divorce from Homer W. Van Horn, with Helena Van Horn requesting 5000 dollars alimony custody of Joseph P. Van Horn age eleven and ongoing support for self and child.
The State motor vehicle department released results showing 241 busses with faulty hand brakes and 117 with improper foot brakes among 1,826 busses used to transport about 60,000 Iowa children. The findings come from a six week investigation.

Two armed men burglarized the Mills county treasurer’s office in Glenwood Iowa taking 1700 in cash. Treasurer Horace Mayberry surprised them as they unlocked the vault and bound him with cords before fleeing. They entered by forcing an outside door and left without touching checks in the vault. Mayberry freed himself after more than an hour and notified Sheriff De Moss.
