A weekend incident in Algona involves the disappearance of 16 year old Vonda Ditsworth after leaving home to return to Miller Produce Co. and an attack on a 17 year old girl. Officers face a double mystery as no witness accounts place Ditsworth after she left.
A Frank Garrett truck left the road and struck the Arthur filling station east of Columbus Junction. All three pumps were broken off and the building shifted about three inches. No injuries were reported.
Cedar Rapids-Frank Brookhiser, a veteran trapshooter, carved a duck he won at the Monticello Gun Club and discovered a gold colored nugget in its crop. He sent the nugget to a jeweler. The verdict returned Monday said brass.
Jack Tyler, Republican opponent of Sheriff Joe Perry, opened a contest of the November 3 election but announced its dismissal. He cited the burden of the case and the uncertainty of the outcome after Perry was declared winner by 10 votes by the board of canvassers.
Annual inventory by Cedar county board of supervisors shows a $2,000-plus rise in personal property value since last year. Total livestock on hand valued at $4,812.25, up from $4,723 previously, including 26 Holstein cows valued at $1,560 this year.
Des Moines reports a surge in tuxedo rentals as New Year’s Eve approaches. A local firm notes higher demand than in the past decade with rental prices around three dollars and fifty cents per suit.
In Tacoma, officials noted activity at Dr. W. W. Mattson home amid the Charles Mattson kidnapping. Family representatives said they were trying to reach the kidnapper, while authorities feared the motive and danger to the ten year old. A federal agent was seen at the residence.
In a grim scene the mangled bodies of four women and eight men are wrapped in blankets and carried out of Rice canon by riders. The United Air Lines plane bound for San Francisco crashed in storm near Los Angeles, killing all twelve aboard. A three sided investigation into the fatal crash was begun as thousands searchers face exposure and exhaustion.
Funeral services for Mrs Claude C. McKee who died at Sioux City after a lingering illness are set for 2 30 p m Wednesday at Shermans Funeral Home. Rev D Chal mers Fulton of the United Presbyterian church will officiate. Burial will be at Elm Grove cemetery. Mrs McKee before marriage was Daisy Gray. She leaves her husband and one son Gray McKee who lives on the west coast. She also leaves a brother in the west. Her husband is a brother of Mrs Hl M Fisher and a son of the late Prof S E McKee a prominent educator here in an earlier generation.
Mr and Mrs Milo F Sorden of Ida Grove have purchased the McKay Music Service and will take possession immediately Milburn McKay left to become sales manager for C G Conn in Elkhart Indiana Sorden formerly supervised music at Wellman High School directed the community band and taught music at Mt Pleasant Mrs Sorden a talented voice teacher will head Washington store for three weeks and travel nine counties for Conn The Sordens are Northwestern graduates and Sorden formed a junior Legion drum corps in Ida Grove now joining Washington music and band circles.
The former Bailey office building is being converted into a modern hotel with painters, carpenters, and electricians at work. An opening date is not fixed, but likely next month, as a marquee is erected and interiors prepared for furnishings and private baths.
At the Christmas party each child received a candy sack and an orange. About 180 children were given gifts, with a few absent due to illness or age.
John H. Mitchell announces his staff of assistants for the Iowa attorney general’s office. Three assistant attorneys general are named, with two temporary appointees and one permanent appointee Paul Freeburn of Davenport.

The Methodist Church schedules a watch night service starting at eight on New Year’s Eve and lasting until the new year. Dr Arthur Atack explains the candlelight service with extinguished auditorium lights and illuminated candles guiding quiet worship and half hour meditations.
Members of Company K 168th Infantry from Washington gathered in Corning Iowa to hear accounts of the death and funeral of Kokomo Jones the oldest enlisted man in the AEF in France. He was 58 and had served in the Spanish American War the Filipino insurrection the Mexican border and in France. He had a son in the same company.
The Journal reports a Goodfellows distribution error and correction. Westminster Guild of the Presbyterian church should receive the basket credited to Mrs. Le land Carris. The basket was picked up at her home and miscredited during distribution Wednesday morning. H. & A. Baking Co donated 104 loaves, and food stores supplied nearly $200 worth of food at cost. Committee chair R E B Arthur announced additional notices will follow.

In Ottumwa frame Franz A. Jacobsen of Davenport faced a slow jury selection today in the murder trial of Catherine Leahy on November 30. Expected completion by tonight with opening statements tomorrow morning. Jacobsen's counsel says he was insane when he shot the girl.
