Iowa City employees approve a $200,000 package raising wages by 5 to 27 percent, with clerical workers receiving the largest boosts. The plan will be added to the existing $2 million wage program. Firemen police officers and administrative staff are not included. City council still must approve the agreement.
The Penn Central Broadway Limited derailed about 40 miles west of Harrisburg carrying 430 passengers from Chicago to New York and Washington. An Amtrak spokesman said there were some injuries, apparently not serious, and ambulances were sent to the scene.
The government of Bangladesh declared a nationwide state of emergency citing threats to security and economic stability from internal disturbances. It did not specify the disturbances, though the country has faced floods famines and political assassinations since independence three years earlier.

Jack Reed a senior at Washington High School was appointed by the Iowa House Patronage Committee to serve as a page in the 1975 session. He will work with the first group January 13 to April 4 and will coordinate messages and bill copies for lawmakers. Reed plans a political science major at Colorado State University and may pursue law. Parents Mr and Mrs Robert Reed reside at 328 East Main Street Washington.
Tracy Anderson of Kalona retires as Washington County attorney Jan 2 and will keep his private firm in Washington at 221 W. Main St. The firm, now including Lawrence Griffiths and Pete Buffer, will operate the Washington office Fridays and be reachable by special telephone hookup other days. Incoming county attorney Richard Bordwell plans to use his Baldrige and Baldrige office initially.

The Iowa Higher Education Facilities Commission named 2,060 State of Iowa Scholars for 1975 from 5,220 applicants based on class rank and ACT scores. Each scholar may receive up to 610 dollars toward tuition. awards depend on financial need and funds.
