Fourteen people were arrested in a late Thursday drug raid at a Sibley home. Osceola County officials said 13 are held in Osceola and Dickinson county jails on possession charges. One juvenile was released to parents.
Eddy Lee Thomas, 34, a Nationwide Homes employee in Martinsville, was charged with five counts of murder and one count of rape in the slayings of a Henry County woman, Mrs. James Aliff, and her four children. Sheriff C P Witt said Thomas had not admitted the killings.
The Internal Revenue Service announced that income tax forms 1040 and 1040A have been mailed to 30 million individual taxpayers. Forms are expected to arrive next week with a new no box for the presidential election campaign fund. The filing deadline remains April 16.
Rescue teams located four year old Joseph Cordova of Albuquerque alive in a Christmas snowstorm near Truth Or Consequences, NM after two nights outdoors. He was transported by ambulance to a local hospital. his condition remained unknown.
Iowa Good Roads Association official estimates nearly 7,000 road construction jobs could vanish if legislative funding lags. Sloan cites a drop from 105 million to 80 million in state road funds, with inflation cutting purchasing power, risking 3,430 state and county jobs plus 3,500 more locally. FBI reports crime rise 16 percent nationwide in first nine months of 1974, largest in the South.
J Merrill Anderson of the Iowa Farm Bureau on a district stage says world food problems hinge on developing nations changing priorities. He cites the Rome World Food Conference, urges incentives for farmers, discusses a 10 million ton annual food reserve and a global council, and warns that aid must require self-help steps and responsible policies to avoid future suffering.
Des Moines reports the newly created Iowa Department of Transportation proposes a 184.2 million operating budget for 1975-76 and 1976-77, with 93.7 million for 75-76 and 90.4 million for 76-77. The plan funds come mostly from federal pools, fees, and a gasoline tax. highway construction costs are excluded. DOT Director Victor Preisser aims for a smoothly running agency within six months of July 1. The governor praises the thorough plan as preparations proceed toward General Assembly approval.
Adjutant General Joseph G. May says changes could alter some units’ missions but not eliminate units. The plan is not final and requires DoD approval with an early spring announcement possible. Fewer than 25 percent of Army Guard units may be affected, no Air Guard changes planned.
Riley Mosley Jr., 26, escaped from Indiana State Prison and hid at a farm in Michigan City. He abducted farm wife Marian Napierala, 54, and her daughter Gayle, 19, for six hours then killed them as he surrendered. Cindy, 17, survived.
The Commerce Department reports a $113 million November deficit as exports of manufactured goods fall and imports of mineral fuels rise. Total trade shows $9.061 billion exports versus $9.174 billion imports, with exports up 4.6 percent and imports up 6.2 percent.
United Press reports comedian Jack Benny, 80, died early today at his Los Angeles home after a brief illness tied to terminal cancer revealed last week. Benny, born Benny Kubelisky in Chicago, rose from vaudeville to radio stardom and later television, shaping American humor with a famous stingy persona and a lifelong public performance ethic.
