Tass quotes Gherman Berezhkov saying Mars 2 and Mars 3 detected a hydrogen corona at 6,200 to 12,400 miles and oxygen up to 434 to 620 miles in Mars atmosphere, signaling new upper-atmosphere composition findings.
Bob Hope said he was not optimistic about his plan to raise money for U.S. POW release from North Vietnam through a children to children campaign. Federal judge Lawrence W. Pierce ordered 16 Vietnam veterans from the Vietnam Veterans Against the War to evacuate the Statue of Liberty and restore access to the public. The group had barricaded themselves inside the monument after arriving on Sunday and refused a compromise to open the statue while allowing camping on Liberty Island.
