Memorials set for Friday at 1 30 p m at Jordans Grove Baptist Church with Rev Walter Wigger. burial in Elm Grove Washington. Born December 10 1875 she married Aaron Bailey March 8 1904. he died 1930. Survived by daughter Alice Thompson and granddaughter Harold Stewart both of Marion three brothers Frank Figgins Des Moines Hal Figgins Richland Wilbur Figgins Belle Plaine and three sisters Della Meville Wyoming Rose Ray Monte Bello Calif Mary Thorn Des Moines.
President Eisenhower flew into Key West for a two week period of sun and work. The Columbine II touched down at 11 49 a m CST after a 3 hour 34 minute flight from Washington. He rode in a Cadillac along Eisenhower Drive at Truman Avenue and Roosevelt Boulevard.
Ely Culbertson, 64, famed creator of the Culbertson bridge system, died Tuesday night in Brattleboro after a brief illness from lung congestion. Born in Romania to a Russian mother and American father, he built a bridge empire with Lucille Dillon, married twice, and influenced world peace ideas during a life devoted to intellect and tournaments.
Funeral services were conducted today at Richland Christian Church for Rev. Arthur Clark Roach 90 who died Monday at Ot tumwa Hospital. He spent 60 years in the ministry including 20 years in Richland and was buried with Masonic rites at Friends cemetery Richland. He is survived by his wife Della May Polley and daughter Bess Loree Roach plus three brothers and a sister.

Emma Rabenold, 84, widow of I B Rabenold, died at 12 15 p m today at the Bolar Rest Home. Ill for three weeks and past five years, she will be buried in Columbus City cemetery after funeral services at 2 p m Friday at the Jones Funeral Home with Dr William J Grossheim in charge.

Edisto broke through six feet of ice in McMurdo Sound to rescue six Seabees stranded for 16 hours at the water edge. They lashed together with rope to avoid plummeting into the sea and were landed ashore by Rear Adm. Byrd’s expedition aboard the USS Glacier.

Neal W. Klausner the college marshal asked university presidents at Grinnell College to stand for the inaugural of Dr. Howard Bowen. He then introduced them to Bowen as men “to whom you can turn for advice consolation and aspirin tablets.”

Martha Luithly 89 longtime Richland resident died this morning after two years of ill health. Funeral 1:30 p m Saturday at Gould Funeral Home Richland with burial in Highland cemetery. Born March 21 1866 in Mahaska County near Rose Hill she married Frank Augustine in 1884. one child Mrs Leppert. She later married Tobias Luithly in 1895 who died 1922. Survivors include sister Mrs Destia Bacon of Oskaloosa.
Chin Peng, 34 year old leader of Malayan Communist guerrillas, met government officials in Baling to discuss peace. Talks deadlocked over recognition of the Communist Party with a later session planned. Government representatives Engku Abdel Rahman and David Marshall faced the question of dissolving the party for amnesty.
Vatican sources say Pope Pius XII is willing to serve as a moral mediator between East and West to avert an atomic war. He would offer spiritual guidance, not formal or technical talks, and any involvement would be at leaders' request and remain non political.

Fire and smoke heavily damaged Powell Furniture Store in Wellman on Tuesday afternoon. Firefighters arrived about 2 30 pm to battle the blaze in the Main street building owned by Dr R W Wirtz. The cause remains undetermined but suspected near the basement furnace. Damage included charred floors, smoke and water damage to the stock, and upstairs apartments. Firefighter Charles Capper suffered a head gash from a falling timber. injuries not believed serious. Insurance covered building and stock losses.
A 16 year old girl from Moline was found hiding across from a Davenport department store after spending three nights and two days there during the Christmas weekend with three suitcases of clothing jewelry and cosmetics valued at 600. She said she feared going home due to involvement in school thefts and was taken to the Scott County Juvenile Home for juvenile authorities review.
