Ottumwa column notes Wapello county tax collections will top $1,353,510 in 1937, per Treasurer Guy Kitterman. The figure marks a substantial jump from $1,247,081 receipts in 1936, an increase of about $100,000.
The Iowa School for the Deaf unveils its new 90 bed infirmary funded by a PWA grant. The building cost $60,000 and Mrs Dorothy Hayes serves as chief nurse in charge of the unit.
A long lean grasshopper, spared by union workers at Des Moines bus terminal, continued a hitchhiking trek seeking warmth. The insect rode a Minneapolis bound ride, rested overnight, then rode a southbound bus with friends placing it on the bumper.
Iowa City Professor Elbert N S Thompson of the University of Iowa English department is expected to return to teaching for the second semester after an eight month confinement from a May 2 automobile accident that fractured his leg.
Waterloo head of Strickler drug store, Waterloo William Strickler, was named to the municipal water works board by the city council. He succeeds Fred D. Adams, the board’s chairman. Board members serve six year terms.
Four of the 21 checks for five thousand dollars each were sent by James Costello to relatives in Iowa. Recipients included Iowane H. FE. Costello Mrs Edmowd Merle Costello and Ray Costello while most live on farms near here Ray Costello resides in Iowa Falls.
A resolution to grant voting and office holding to retired ministers at the Sioux City presbytery winter meeting was rejected. Rev. J Boyd Stevenson of Bronson serves as moderator amid about 70 delegates in attendance.
City council approves a new electric lighting rates schedule by People's Gas and Electric Co. Officials estimate the change will save commercial and residential users about 15000 annually and roughly three dollars per year per average customer.
Keosauqua Forrest Moreland, county auditor for one and a half years, resigned his office. The resignation was accepted immediately by the county board of supervisors. Moreland, a single man, had served five years as deputy auditor before becoming auditor. The board offered no statement about the resignation.
Newton Monday brought live stock matters to district court. Jurors grappled with blame in a cow ear collision but shifted to a payment dispute for a horse. Charles Guthrie sold the horse to Don Morrison for 100 dollars with 69 dollars for care claimed. Harry Nagel seeks 200 dollars from W PD Bidwell after a car collision with Bidwell's cow allegedly led at night without a warning light.
U S commerce department reports November exports at 314 million dollars with imports of 223 million. The favorable balance totals 91.456 million. Agricultural output pushes eleven month export surplus to 151.67 million, while eleven month shipments abroad stand at 28.027 billion dollars, up 800.694 million from 1926.

Riverside, Dec 28 John Krebs 71 prominent stock raiser of Riverside died Sunday morning at Mercy hospital Iowa City from pneumonia. Funeral 2 pm Wednesday at Methodist Church with burial in Riverside Cemetery. Survived by five children and multiple relatives. Former Duroc Jersey breeder whose animals reached nationwide markets.
Comptroller C B Murtagh announced Iowa county city and school property taxes would rise by 95 million in 1938 based on fifty counties. Thirty one counties posted gains while nineteen counties reduced county levies led by reductions in Cass Dallas Des Moines Guthrie Henry Ida Jasper Madison Marshall Mills Mitchell Monroe Osceola Palo Alto Ringgold Sac Taylor Washington and Werth.
Chairman Tom Duncan reported that the Goodfellows of Washington totaled 209.44 in cash contributions this year. The group distributed 115 baskets, 20 donated by the Catholic Daughters of America, with higher food costs and one to two chickens per basket. Donations came from store container boxes, a journal coupon drive, a Whittaker sale, and individuals including Louise Porter.
A dense fog over the southern half of Iowa was lifting this afternoon as temperatures moderated. Des Moines reports the fog thinning with milder air moving in from the south.
Christmas mail handled at the Washington post office from December 16 to 25 rose sharply over 1936, reflecting more cards and parcels. ALGONA Iowa December 28 Former U S Senator Lester J Dickinson 64 announced his bid for the Republican senatorial nomination in the June primaries from his family farm He stressed thrift over debt and said experience and common sense are needed in public service Dickinson had carried strong showings in 1928 and 1936 races and was an early critic of the New Deal Also named to oppose Dickinson is Halden a Chariton editor with party backing aimed to focus the race between the two men
Mrs. Mary Adrian aged 84 mother of Bishop William Adrian of Tennessee died in Clinton Iowa. Survived by two sons Dr Frank Adrian of Sigourney and John of Iowa City and a daughter. Funeral services to be held in Sigourney.
Elias Milton Kuhn longtime Woodlawn cemetery sexton died in Ottumwa hospital from a heart condition after a period of declining health. Services will be at 11 a m Wednesday at L A Jones funeral home with Rev Vermon H Carter presiding. Burial in Elm Grove cemetery. He was born December 2 1856 in Lancaster County Pennsylvania and lived in Washington most of his life. He married Amelia Casady in 1889 and is survived by his wife and a half sister Miss Mira Shafer. his son Charles Milton Kuhn died last November.
A coroner's jury in Warren Ohio returns an accidental death verdict in the Christmas Eve shooting of Mrs. Cordelia Campbell. Louise Campbell, 28, daughter of the victim, is released after giving blood for a transfusion. she had been detained since Christmas morning.
Iowa Governor Kraschel refused clemency for John Mercer and Allen Wheaton, sentenced to hang January 24. Wheaton, 21, is the second youngest executed in state history. Mercer, 29, confessed to the murder charged in Tipton Vigilante case. The governor said exhaustive records showed no valid reasons for clemency.
Forty five Americans were evacuated today from Tsingtao aboard the US gunboat Sacramento to Shanghai as Japanese forces crossed Shandong province. The Sacramento is due in two days and two other ships Marblehead and Pope stand by to remove up to 250 more Americans when danger grows.
Six bandits one armed with a machine gun robbed the De Motte Indiana bank today of 2500 dollars. Police gathered leads as the robbery stunned the town and prompted a swift investigation by local and state authorities.
