Wet bloc in Senate plans big post-holiday demonstration
Washington Dec 27 UP The wets plan their largest congressional display since prohibition began as 18 senators are invited to a bloc assembly in the upper house to decide on action. Invitations are being prepared by Senator Edge with names kept secret until acceptance. The meeting aims to influence legislative action on Volstead act amendments and enforcement bills despite a dry Senate.

Funeral Held For Joseph Carson Aged 83 In Washington Area
Funeral services were conducted at the Carson home at 2 30 this afternoon for Joseph Carson age 83 who died Saturday night at his North Washington area farm. Rev J Reade McCrory led the rites with burial in Elm Grove cemetery. He was born February 24 1845 in Washington county Pa to Samuel and Margaret Mount Carson and married Deborah Hamilton January 24 1867 at Sunbeam. He leaves a widow a grandson a brother Thomas Carson of Wichita a foster daughter Mrs Myrtle Nickerson and several nieces and nephews.

Fire in Waterloo downtown causes near half million in damages
A downtown Waterloo blaze of undetermined origin today caused about 500000 in damage. The fire started in a bookstore basement and spread to a jewelry shop and the Crystal theater, which was destroyed. Two ready to wear stores also suffered heavy damage as police rescued residents from the burning building.

Albert Gilchrist of Sandwich Til died Christmas Eve at five o clock in the Watertown NL hospital where he had been taken for treatment. He was brother of Reverend Alexander Gilchrist a prominent United Presbyterian minister. He married Villa Morton sister of Mrs T T Keeley. Surviving are Mrs Gilchrist and one daughter Mrs Walter Wilson of Ann Arbor Michigan and two grandchildren Mrs Wilson ill and unable to attend the funeral.

Christmas Booze Kills Two Des Moines Men
Coroner Guy Clift announced Christmas cheer caused two deaths in Des Moines. Sherman Daugherty 38 and F G Pearson 27 died of acute alcoholism after recent arrests for intoxication. Pearson was found dead in a hotel room while Daugherty died at Broad Lawns General Hospital after arrest.

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Tuesday at the home for Miss Margaret Hawthorne who died Sunday evening. Burial will follow in Crawfordsville. Born July 13 1846 in Harrison County Ohio she was the daughter of Hugh B and Zilliah Riche Hawthorne. She moved to Washington seventeen years ago and had suffered a fractured hip since August. A lifelong member of United Presbyterian Church and a member of the WCTU she was the last of eight children and had lived with her sister-in-law since her brother James died in 191%. The obituary closes with prayer for the departed and for souls to meet in glory.

Funeral services for Mrs Elgie Edwards will be held Tuesday at two o'clock in Goodin funeral parlors with Dr W W Bowers in charge. Burial will follow in Elm Grove Cemetery. She died Saturday evening from a dose of strychnine, left no note, and her motive is unknown. She was born January 3 1890 in the community, married 1906 to Charley Edwards who died in 1916 leaving two sons Raymond 16 and Gerald 18. She supported her family, leaves her parents two sons a brother John Messenger and three sisters Stella Messenger Mary Williams and Gertrude Wallace. She had joined the Baptist Church in youth and remained affiliated.

J L Lyon a former Washington businessman died suddenly of heart disease last Monday at his Tarpon Springs Florida home. Funeral services were held yesterday at Tolon, TL. Lyon and his son operated a bakery in the square before the business was sold to C L Lyon. He was about 70 years old and moved to Florida five years ago.
