Snowflakes booklet highlights Iowa City students' winter writings

Iowa City students from grades two through six contributed poems fiction and nonfiction on winter Christmas and the holidays for a booklet titled Snowflakes produced by the University of Iowa Women in Communication chapter. 52 winning entries appear with illustrations by Maureen Olsen and centerfold story The Long Trip and the Snowflake by Kathy Sutherland.

Holiday traffic toll nears five hundred deaths in 78 hours

The National Safety Council had projected 550 to 650 traffic deaths during the 78 hour Christmas period from Friday evening to Monday midnight. United Press International counted 539 traffic fatalities by 2 a.m. EST with total deaths at 626 across all causes. California led with 45 traffic deaths followed by Texas 42, Pennsylvania 31, New York 23 and Michigan 22.

Nixon hails Truman as courageous leader in mourning tribute

President Nixon eulogizes Harry S Truman as one of the most courageous presidents and proclaims a national day of mourning. Audit Finds $35,000 Shortage in Muscatine County Treasury

State Auditor Lloyd Smith reports a special audit of the Muscatine County treasurer dated Jan 1 1971 to Nov 20 1972 shows 35000.90 missing including 10103.73 in 1971 tax receipts and 14614.22 in 1972 plus unregistered receipts and an overstated investment. Former Treasurer Lauren Goddard resigned Nov 20, 1972.

Berlin Christmas reunions bridge East and West

West Berliners crossed into East Berlin for the first Christmas since 1965 under a Big Four accord. Up to two million transit the Wall passes have widened, reuniting families amid limited goods like chocolate and citrus while turkey and dairy remain plentiful.
