The first grade classes from Crawfordsville elementary in Waco visited Parkview Home in Wayland on December 21. They chose to visit residents, prepared decorations and cookies, learned carols, and delivered handmade gifts to patients, spreading cheer as smiles filled the halls.
Arnold R. Miller was sworn in as president of the United Mine Workers, ending 24 years of Lewis dynasty leadership. Miners crowded the headquarters for the ceremony, with former leader Tony Boyle absent from an open administration. Miller pledged to spend time in the coal regions, asserting the union would no longer belong to one man.
Crane Company will appeal District Court Judge Arthur McGiverin’s Dec 4 ruling on its 1970 Washington plant property value. Baldrige and Baldrige filed the appeal for Crane, the county Board of Review, and Assessor H Ernest Lund. McGiverin set the Jan 1 1970 value at 3,682,562, between board and company estimates.

Officials report many deaths and ongoing rescue efforts as Comsat station lines are disrupted.
Former President Harry S Truman, 88, remained in critical condition in Kansas City as his heart beat erratically, lung congestion worsened, and blood pressure fell on two occasions. Doctors kept him stable with medication while noting slight decline in kidney function.
In Jacksonville an estranged couple opened fire during a divorce hearing. The husband, Mary E. Hickson’s husband, fled and was later charged with murder after off duty officer Fred G Lampe shot Hickson in the heart as she pursued him through the judge’s chambers. The wife was wounded in the wrist and treated at a hospital.

In nearly four hours of testimony, Van Buren County Sheriff Orville Lee claimed a vast conspiracy to convict him of a crime. He hinted at unnamed conspirators while denying altering gun registrations and defending his innocence regarding two county owned Krag rifles. The trial recessed as the jury awaits further witnesses and possible late December verdict.
Two people die in separate early morning crashes in central Iowa. Steven R. Collins 22 of Barnum died in a one car crash near Iowa 7 and U S 169 after skidding 248 feet and leaving the road. Lee Mumford 67 of Pocahontas died when a vehicle went off Iowa 3 into a ditch two miles east of Goldfield. Pamela Wiseman 20 of Pocahontas was hospitalized with noncritical injuries. Collins' death is Webster County's 22nd this year and Mumford's is Wright County's fifth.
