Christmas holiday returns to normal in Washington area
Life in Washington largely returned to normal after Christmas events as stores and offices opened. The post office remained closed by order from President Nixon extending the holiday for federal workers, with other federal offices affected. The Washington County courthouse also closed, giving workers a longer break. In Des Moines a police officer helped deliver a belated Christmas baby at the Burrows home, mother and child reported in good condition. A 17-year-old from Vinton lay in critical condition after a hunting accident near Vinton. In New York an organist endured radio interference during a Christmas mass. A Milwaukee man awoke to smoke and sought attic refuge in his clothes. In Riverside police found four-year-old twins with flashlights intruding, while in Chicago a family fed about 30 officers a Christmas turkey dinner.

200 Poor Families Eat Christmas Dinner in Modesto
About 200 families in the San Joaquin Valley received a holiday meal of canned meat flour raisins rice peanut butter cheese powdered eggs and milk. One man waited six hours for food planned to share beans for his six children. Attorney Philip Newmark won a federal court order to open a Sacramento surplus warehouse long enough to load three truckloads of food.
