Fire saves eight children and parents in Fontana blaze

A Fontana woman Rosemary Starry twice braved flames to rescue her eight children and her invalid husband Elmer. The family suffered extensive burns and other injuries with several children in critical or serious condition. Fire investigators delayed on cause, two firefighters burned mildly.

Bomb kills 51 worshipers in Colombia blast

The Christmas Eve bombing at the Army post in BUGA killed at least 51 people including 12 soldiers and 39 civilians, with 122 injured. Investigators pursued leads toward an underground terrorist group, while reports named Gustavo Nes Barabbas as the bomber and noted his widow being questioned.

Consumers, while more confident, slowed purchases of hard goods and focused on savings and debt reduction amid persistent cautiousness.

Funeral services for Walter Hershberger in Kalona

Funeral services for Walter Eugene Hershberger 33 were held at 10 am in Kalona Methodist Church with Rev. Edward Philgreen and Rev. Howard Marty presiding. Arrangements were by Yoder Funeral Home. He died December 23 1961 in University Hospital after a two week heart condition treatment. He was born November 1 1928 in Johnson County. He married Betty Bontrager June 12 1946 and lived in Kalona working for Farmers Supply Sales Co. Survivors include his wife three sons Dean Ardell Ricky Lee and Devon Eugene his mother Mrs Cora Hershberger of Kalona one brother Samuel Jr of Gales Ferry Conn two sisters Mrs Ernest Ropp and Mrs Franklin J Miller of Kalona and one grandmother Mrs Katie Brenneman of Sharon.

Barn Fire Destroys Milo Kempi Farm Near Wayland

Firefighters responded to a morning blaze at the Milo Kempi farm southeast of Wayland. A large barn burned with 10 of 12 sows and 98 pigs lost, along with baled straw. cause is unknown. The property is owned by the David Roth family.

West Virginia principals back food stamp plan for students

A group of McDowell County West Virginia school principals praised the Kennedy administration food stamp pilot, saying healthier clothing and better-fed pupils reduced absences. Letters from 28 principals, sent to the Agriculture Department, show widespread approval with only one dissenting note.

Five Die In Rural Mountain House Fire Near Burnsville NC

A fire in a rural mountain home near Burnsville North Carolina killed five people including a Newport News Virginia mother and her two young children visiting relatives. The homeowner Curtis Honeycutt 61 and his son Ventana 15 also perished. Mrs Honeycutt escaped with burns and shock and was hospitalized. Jo sephine Wilson 26 and her two sons Billy Joe 2 and Roger 1 from Newport News were among the victims.

Funeral services for Robert D Sherman, 55, will be held Wednesday, December 27, 1961 at 10 30 a m in the Sherman Eden Funeral Home. The Rev Vernon Elgin will officiate with burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. Mr Sherman died December 23 at Spencer Iowa.

Rural mail carrier Jugenheimer retires after long service

LeRoy Jugenheimer ends a 39 year rural route three career in Washington with the post office. He began as custodian in 1922 and started rural delivery in 1942. Route length grew from 55 to over 65 miles and now travels on surfaced roads. He and his wife live near Washington with three grown children living out of town.

Skating Party Set Wednesday Afternoon

All grade school boys are invited to meet at the YMCA at 1 30 p m Wednesday for an ice or roller skating outing. Transportation to Cherry Pond or the roller rink is provided. Ice skating costs may be waived if conditions permit. Bring ice skates. roller skaters need 50 cents with skates or 75 cents without. If ice is unsafe, money may be used for safety.

White Christmas Delays Hit County Road Crews

Washington County state and county highway workers logged long shifts during a heavy snow event that began with rain on Friday. Fifteen workers plus extra help operated two heavy four wheel drive plow trucks, three spreader trucks, two dump trucks and two graders through Friday to Sunday, averaging around 750 miles per plow with one machine surpassing 825 miles. The event disrupted vacation plans and required continuous snow removal and salt spreading.

Iowa Highways Return Toward Normal After Snow Slide

Crews eased Iowa’s snow hold as temperatures rose into the 30s and 40s except the northeast. Roads in the north and southeast neared normal with progress across the state. In the southwest percent snow and ice remained high but clearing continued as an Arctic front neared. Temperatures will fall tonight then rise slowly by Wednesday across regions.

Stella Swartzwalder Dies in Richland

Stella Swartzwalder, 86, died at her Richland home on Christmas morning 1961 after a period of illness. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Gould Funeral Home with Rev Naomi Lock officiating. burial in Richland Friends Cemetery. She was born Oct 4, 1875 south of Richland, married Elmer Swartzwalder in 1896, and later moved to Richland in 1944. Survivors include her son Raymond and four sisters in Wisconsin, California, Colorado. She belonged to Woolson Church and Richland OES chapter.

Funeral Held Today for George Haberman

Funeral services for George Haberman were held at 1 30 p m in Wayland Methodist Church. He died Sunday morning at his home four miles north of Wayland after a four week illness. He was born November 13 1884 in Holdingford Minnesota. He married Mary Kappes and they celebrated their golden anniversary about a year ago. Survivors include children Edward and George Jr Tama Melvin J Wayland Ervin Tucson Arch ie Kalona Marie Otto and Betty Johnson Omaha plus 13 grandchildren eight sisters and three brothers. He was a creamery operator and farmer and a member of the Methodist Church Masonic and Knights of Pythias lodges.
