A Des Moines column notes the Iowa state health department warning that pneumonitis, a pneumonia complication of a cold, is prevalent in the northern U S. It may reach Iowa. The illness lasts at least three weeks with coughing and lung inflammation. Early cold care is essential to avoid future complications.
Ottumwa report says 16 year old Clarence Swope, son of W H Clark, sustained a bullet wound to the right hip when a .22 rifle bullet ricocheted on ice during a hunting trip. He was taken to Ottumwa hospital in fair condition.
Mr and Mrs Harrison A Crawford of Waterloo aged 89 and 88 celebrated their seventeenth wedding anniversary with a family dinner on Christmas Day at their daughter’s Shell Rock home Mrs Roy Miller. The youngest guest was great great granddaughter Nancy Lee Morgan seven weeks old. Seventy years ago on December 24 Crawford then a young farmer walked 11 miles to Waterloo for his marriage license in bitter 25 below zero weather with heavy snow.
Waterloo The Rev. Father N J Lentz, pastor of St John s co church, announced Friday the church mortgage was burned after full payment of 125000 debt on church and school property. Initiated 18 years ago with 75 families by Father Lentz at the request of Archbishop James Kane, the parish now lists 550 families with assistant Father T L Flood.
Police report a theft at the American Petroleum filling station on South Town Avenue. Entry appeared forced and the incident is believed to have happened last night with $32 missing from the till.

Police fear nurse Edna Main abducted three year old Kenneth Morrison from the Morrison family in Rock Island after both disappeared during a visit to Davenport. The 18 year old, a former Dixon state hospital patient, was last seen with the boy wearing a blue coat and brown trousers. No clothing was taken.

Outlook from Iowa State College economists says 1943 goals balanced, with high meat and corn demand, favorable hog feeding, and soybeans supported. Hogs may rise 15 percent spring and 20 percent fall farrowings with prices near 13.25 per cwt Chicago floor under government ceilings. Dairy uncertain yet butterfat favorable, cattle demand strong, poultry egg target up 13 percent with improved care and feeding. weather and labor constraints loom.
The Office of Price Administration set a minimum margin of one to three cents per gallon for retail gasoline and filing stations to aid small businesses. It also authorized a three tenths of a cent per gallon fuel oil increase delivered to coupon holders in the 30 eastern and midwestern states, effective December 29.
Three last minute contributions brought the Good Fellow fund this year to $66.75, about $30 less than a year ago. Donations included Old Reliable Hardware store $5, Mrs. G. E. $1, Miss dna Schaeffer of St. Louis $1. Chairman Boyd White, Doug lass Smith and Roger Sherman thank all who contributed.
Mrs. Elizabeth Corbin dies Christmas morning in a Des Moines hospital from pneumonia after three months of illness. Born September 9 1879 southeast of Washington she lived in this county most of her life with two years in Des Moines and in Washington since 1918. Her home was 409 West Main Street. Surviving are two daughters Margaret of Austin Texas Nita of New Orleans a brother W R Gamon and a sister Mrs H N Wearmouth. Funeral Sunday at 2 30 p m at L A Jones funeral home with Dr R G Keagy in charge. Burial in Elm Grove cemetery.
Mayor Lloyd Lytle fines William Dunbar $15 or five days in county jail and Dunbar was placed in jail this morning to serve the sentence.
Notices of induction into the army were posted for a group of Washington county registrants. The January draft call includes those from the fifth registration of June 30, ages 18 and 19 at registration. Names printed today include Daryl Dunbar, Leo Lynch, Ivan Norris, Halph Sistern, and others, with instructions on reporting for transport to the induction center for physicals and possible induction followed by a week’s furlough.
A Christmas day with overcast skies gave way to a prolonged rain event. Rain fell through the night and continued into today with a steady mid afternoon downpour. By 10 am the measured rainfall was .60 of an inch and temperatures stayed mild enough to avoid icy walks. Washington observed Christmas as a very quiet holiday with most businesses closed.
Washington county 4-H boys will travel Monday to Ames for the state 4-H boys short course and convention December 28 29 and 30 with Deane Rinner county president as voting delegate. Harold Horak Warren Dare and other club members will attend sessions and proceedings detailing wartime farm issues and food production methods presented by Iowa State College and agricultural leaders.
Reports from Algiers say General H. Giraud, who escaped from a German camp, may be named to succeed Admiral Darlan as French leaders rally to form a new African policy. The assassin of Darlan, said to have confessed, is believed killed at dawn under court martial orders. Hull called the act odious and cowardly, stressing focus on controlling the African front without distraction.
Sheriff H M Putnam received a report of a stolen suitcase from a Rock Island couple about a mile east of town. A Batavia driver later flagged down the sheriff revealing the thief had left the suitcase on the curb. its contents were clothing and the dog in the car remained untouched.
