Senator George W. Norris said he would not accept Columbia professor John Dewey's invitation to form a third party movement. Norris said he had seen Dewey's letter only in the papers and doubted any serious push for him to break from the Republican Party. He added he would discuss the matter later and believed no one seriously expected him to lead a new party.
Frisco railroad wins Interstate Commerce Commission approval for a two cent per mile passenger rate. G. J. McGuire, director of the western passenger association, says other lines such as Santa Fe Illinois Central Missouri Pacific and Rock Island plan to match the reduced fare only where Frisco directly competes, with no universal rate change yet.
Chicago politics grow turbulent as Judge John H. Lyle enters the mayoral race on a drive out the gangsters platform. He campaigns for the Republican nomination promising to purge criminal gangs and separate crime from politics while advocating police focus on professional criminals. He joins incumbents Thompson and Barrett with Anton Cermak leading the Democratic side.
Maria Gustava Strum widow of A W Strum died at her Lexington home after a brief illness. She was 83. Funeral set for Sunday at L A Jones funeral home with burial in Elm Hove beside her husband who died December 28 1924. She was born Maria Nelson in Sweden October 7 1847 and came to the United States in 1882. Surviving: three children A R Strum Lena Hemmelreich and Jennie. five grandchildren. six great grandchildren. one brother J P Nelson of Minnesota.
Chicago news bureau reports Charles G. Vincent aged 35 of Washington Iowa and Frances C. Rohmer aged 37 of Moline Illinois were licensed to marry today in the city.
July wheat on the Chicago board of trade dropped to 62 1/2 cents a bushel, the lowest since July 1896, as trading closed on December 26. The drop marks a historic low for wheat in Chicago trading circles.
United Press reports eight fatalities marred Iowa Christmas. At Dallas Center a collision involving William Agnew's car and a railroad train killed his wife and mother of his child, both Perry residents. In Albia a crash killed Harold Powers's mother and his fiancee, while Powers and his grandfather survived. Signe Nelson and S. C. Curtain died in separate Sioux City incidents. Muscatine man Harold Schmoeller died cleaning a shotgun. Bert Vincent died in Clinton from a pedestrian collision.
H R Lund, formerly of Washington and three years as manager of the J C Penney Co Store at Braddock Pennsylvania, is named manager of the Washington Penney store and will assume duties soon after January 1. He was assistant manager here under Mr Dickerson before three years ago.
Mrs. D. J. Leech of Fairfield dies at 12:30 today. She was the sister of the late D. L. Baird and daughter of Thomas L. Baird. Survived by husband, one son, four daughters, sister Olive Smith, brother William Baird of Portland, and sister Mrs. George Frazier. Funeral Saturday at 2:30 in Fairfield.

Harold A. Schmoeller 24 died from a gunshot wound at his Muscatine home while cleaning a 16 gauge shotgun. A private service is set for Saturday at 2:30 PM at his parents’ home in Washington, with burial in Elba Grove cemetery. Surviving are his parents, widow Dorothy, a daughter, a brother James, and a sister Lucille.
Brannon Iowa welcomed visitors from Cedar Falls and Kent Ohio for the holidays. Illness interrupted Pasier during a recent visit. An auto collision near Ainsworth injured Vivian Rich. Local families and school friends gathered for holiday arrivals and sales events.

Indianapolis December 26 Kin Hubbard renowned for Abe Martin sketches and Abe Martin of Brown county dies in his sleep at home after Christmas day illness. The Indiana humorist born Frank McKechner Webbard was 6? years old, wife says. He rose to fame at the Indianapolis News where he stayed.
Washington high school and junior college teams meet tonight with the junior college at home against Brown's Business College of Muscatine. The high school travels to Ottumwa for a second Little Six game against a strong circuit opponent led by coach Jim Shultz.
In Council Bluffs P Jones faces jail time of zero days as Judge Blanchard defers sentence and paroles him to his wife. Cedar Rapids reports a separate suit filed by Carie Miller and M L Willer against Troy Laundry Co for 12500 alleging the death of Gustavus Miller when a laundry track struck his wagon. Community notes mention quarantine and Christmas greetings as locals visit and recover.
James James Little born March 7 1861 in Washington county died after strokes at his North Marion avenue home at 1 30 am Thursday aged 69 He served as city marshal under Mayor Ed Boevee and later as district court bailiff He was a pioneer Washington fire department member and attended the Methodist church He is survived by his widow son Walter Little and four grandchildren with a sister Mrs Henry Minick of Washington and brothers Tom and John Little previously deceased Funeral services are set for Saturday at 2 30 pm at L A Jones funeral home with interment in Elm Grove cemetery
Three hundred chickens were smothered to death at the Reister poultry house when an overheated furnace emitted gas. Found by workers yesterday morning, it marked the first such accident at the plant. No fire occurred and the loss is covered by insurance.
A United Press survey counted over 200 Christmas day deaths from accidents fires poison liquor and violence across the United States. Standouts include seven burned in Whiting Indiana and eleven poisoned by liquor in New York City with multiple other fatalities in Philadelphia St Louis and Wisconsin.
Word from Judge Frank announces the district court term postponed from January 6 to January 12. Court opens at ten o'clock with grand jury impaneled at 1 30 pm. Petit jurors report at two o'clock on January 19. Equity and non jury cases set for trial in the first week.
In Kentucky on Christmas day five people were killed or wounded in shootings. Deputy Sheriff John Mosley and his brother were ambushed at a Cow Creek home as three robbery suspects were arrested, Mosley killed and his brother wounded the woman Martha Smith and H Hearald were also killed. At Kidd schoolhouse in McCreary county Frank Hamblin and Clarence Lovett died in a quarrel that left Hamblin's son Ernest wounded and Lovett slain. Several others were wounded before officers arrived.
