In Berlin the unemployed disturbances erupted in the working class district and spread to Leipziger Strasse. Police used force to disperse crowds shouting hunger and anti government chants. Several injured and many arrested as mounted and foot units cracked down.
A fragmented diary style note from Burbank dated December 24 hints at a joke about firing workers and job security. The writers quip about bosses, Christmas cards, and uneasy chats about employment, with unclear references to Reis and colleagues.
Willis Lyman Wood, 64, died at 3 45 this morning at Washington county hospital a week after suffering a paralytic stroke. Funeral at 230 Friday at Baptist church with Rev A 4 Vinz. burial in Ainsworth cemetery. Survived by wife Ida Long three children Maurice L Wood and two daughters in law. 13 grandchildren. Born in Mercer county Illinois June 10 1867 the Wood family moved to Washington county in 1876. He lived in South Dakota briefly then returned here in 1915. He was a Modern Woodmen member and Sons of Veterans.
Pilgrims from many nations stream into Bethlehem to celebrate the Christmas mass at the Church of the Nativity. Donkey carts and limousines fill the streets as Arabs and Jews largely abstain from celebration, while Christians, prelates, and American clergy mingle in a spirit of peace and shared devotion.
The Methodist Sunday school program is tonight at 7:00 with a mixed program chaired by Mrs. E. B. Stutsman. It includes exercises carols recitations and two sketches re telling the Christmas story. A White Gift Offering will go to hospital service for children. Santa Claus will greet the youngsters and give them a treat. Adults are invited.
S Clark of Chicago a nationally prominent speaker will address the Better Washington club at the January 16 meeting. His talk is titled Fishing for Business in 1981 and is arranged by J Elliot Grayson chairing the program committee. Clark has led in advertising and public roles including president of the Cincinnati Advertising club and director of the National Confectioners association. Special invitation goes to business men.
Clerks and carriers in the Washington post office plan a rest day Thursday after heavy recent workload. No deliveries will be made on Christmas Day except for special delivery items. Four extra workers labored from six in the morning until after dark yesterday delivering holiday mail.
Surrounding towns are expected to join as a large crowd gathers for the upcoming meeting night, signaling strong local interest and engagement.
The Junior Welfare League charity sale yesterday raised 10.26 dollars to aid Washington’s needy. The group, largely composed of local girls, has not decided exact allocations but the funds will go to deserving people.
The town shines with extensive Christmas lighting in business and residence areas. Four large trees in the square illuminate the park while many homes display lit trees and illuminated shrubs. In Lapeer Michigan on December 24 seven youths aged 11 to 20 were whipped in the county jail garage by relatives and friends after being implicated in petty thefts. Five pleaded guilty before Judge Henry H. Smith and were placed on six months probation. The judge did not comment on the punishments but indicated support for whippings as a corrective measure. Names include Tony Schultz 17 and Dorland Stoneberg 19 among others.
Milburn McKay was elected president of the Y s Men s club for a year and a half and may attend the international convention likely at Cleveland next summer. He succeeds Foster Bickel who led the group for the past year. Other officers chosen include Henry Bailey vice president Lewis Warren secretary treasurer Foster Bickel Claude Tucker Dick McCleery Leland Morrison Harry Ramser Leslie Dunlay. The meeting also allocated 36.46 to the Good Fellows fund from the poultry committee after distributing chickens to needy local families.
Yesterday evening Christmas baskets were filled and distributed to needy homes in Washington by the Catholic Daughters of America linked to St James church. Contents came from order members and local business supporters with M M Thompson supplying a full basket of supplies and delivering via a truck driven by Orin Wallace. G N Barclay donated one can of vegetables per basket and H and A Bakery provided a coffee cake for each basket. Mr and Mrs R J Horning will visit relatives in Oskaloosa Iowa for Christmas.
Moscow reports the annual anti religious campaign begins tonight with millions of atheists denouncing religious superstition. Authorities promise no physical interference but push moral pressure through lectures and events to divert youth from church observance. Theatres and cinemas stay open late as part of the effort.
The Washington county Ministerial Association meets at the Y M C A on Monday December 29 at ten in the morning for a program on Observances of Special Days of the Christian Year. Rev D Chalmers Fulton will open with Open Doors of the New Year and Rev E S Halmer will discuss The Church's Observance of Its Calendar.
The J. L Penney Co distributes annual Christmas bonuses to employees totaling 1050 with 6671 people benefiting. Checks will be issued December 24 and applicants include staff in 1450 stores plus New York City and St Louis offices. The group includes 144 more recipients than last year. Bonuses depend on service duration and salary. several named local staff receive 50 each.
The Y's Men's Club delivered the most practical Christmas baskets yet prepared by the group. Nearly 100 families are to receive aid, with a post tally over $828 in donations and extensive contributions from individuals and local firms.
Washington junior college nearly upset the Ottumwa team at Ottumwa last night as Ottumwa pulled away in the final period to win 39 to 21. Ottumwa led early and by half a dozen at halftime, while Washington closed the gap to within one in the third before Ottumwa regained control.
Carl Jungbluth Julius Oslin Glen Mace Al Fields H R Sitler Leo Wolf Claire Dewey and W E Barber of the Will Ht Dilg Conservation League visited Columbus Junction Tuesday evening to recruit members. They spoke to business men and sportsmen from Letts and Ottumwa reporting rapid chapter growth with Ottumwa already organized and Muscatine Davenport chapters planned for January. The local chapter now lists 80 members.
Part of the list of poultry contributors for Chicago needy from Noble has just been furnished the Journal. Names include S. D. Graber, J. T. Wenger, Ed Krabill, Wilbur Schantz, Joe Widmer, Joe Mast, Stella Rinner, Ed Rinner, Shem Swartzendruber, Graber brothers, A. F. Mitchell, J. J. Rich, Valentine Schaad and Dave Graber.
The shipment of over 1000 chickens from Washington County to Chicago was received by the Northwestern Rotary and broadcast to millions. Five hundred chickens fund a Christmas dinner for the unemployed while the rest go to baskets with a card noting their origin. The gesture boosted Christmas spirit among Chicago’s unemployed and benefited many families.
Forecasters predict a crisp clear Christmas with cold temperatures across much of the central plains Pacific Northwest and eastern regions. Snow is possible in many areas while only near St Louis and Kansas City may sleet and rain occur. California's San Joaquin Valley expected cool weather with frost protection for oranges.
More than 400 toys were distributed yesterday and today by the YWCA with help from Camp Fire girls led by Mrs. Dowell and assisted by Mrs. Lester Orr and college YWCA volunteers. A new box arrived and four more families were added to the Christmas remembrances list. Packages included personal items and Christmas tags. the Girl Scouts prepared 400 popcorn balls for Good Fellow baskets and Mrs. Otto Schiebel made 59 bags of popcorn and candy.
Funeral services are planned for Thursday at 2 39 in Davenport for Harve Custer who died yesterday at Mercy hospital. The L A Jones funeral home will handle arrangements with Rev A A Vinz of the Baptist church officiating. Burial will be in Elm Grove cemetery. He had been ill for two weeks and lived in Davenport fourteen years after earlier decades in Washington. He was born June 6 1886 in Washington son of John and Jeannetta Custer. He married Maude Parker six years ago and leaves three children Josephine Beatrice Dennis. siblings Lan Fred Dave Mrs Effie Hazen Mrs Edith Dericks and Charles John Ed Wesley Custer. his mother lives with a daughter in Muscatine.
