In Beirut, scores of climbers from the Champollion disaster resume their pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Of 618 aboard, 27 died, nearly 70 injured, as rescuers including Capt Balpayj and his brother Sarah saved many passengers from the wrecked liner.
Patrolman Rube Warner the driver license examiner and assistants will not be at the Washington courthouse until January 8. Renewals and new licenses will be delayed due to the holiday schedule.
Walter Pritchett a 45 year old Counce man was wounded in a quarrel with his in laws during a Christmas visit in Waterloo. Joan Winoke a 54 year old fired two revolver shots at Pritchett claiming self defense and was not held.
Mrs Theresa Wilson, dying of tuberculosis, will meet her daughter Mary Theresa briefly today. Doctors fear infection risk and will not allow physical contact. Foster parents Mr. and Mrs. Redfern of Brooklyn accompanied the child. reunion delayed due to health and travel concerns.
Teachers from the junior high school were guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Morris and Gordon Monday evening for an open house event.
Iowa State graduates students and families will attend a banquet at the Washington YMCA at 6 30 Monday evening December 29. Reservations urged by Saturday via extension office. Special guest Dean Helen R LeBaron of home economics. Alumni representatives will be present and a social time with square dancing will follow.
Herbert Hoover and President-elect Dwight Eisenhower met at a lunch in Washington to discuss government. Hoover, aged retired Republican figure, listened as Eisenhower described the gathering as social while noting the broad talk covered past present and future affairs for mutual benefit.
Dr Raymond C Reed pastor of Washington Methodist Church spoke at the Kiwanis noon meeting in the YMCA. He presented The True Story of the Innkeeper.
Marie Margaret Kinney sues Willard K. Kinney in district court seeking a divorce filed in 1947 with no children. She requests a share of jointly owned property costs and restoration of her maiden name Marie Margaret Churchill.
Detective reports accuse Evelyn Collier 68 of forcing her two stepchildren Dorothy 10 and John 9 to shoplift. The youths claim she beat them for mistakes and used a shopping bag system to hide items, while they await juvenile detention over Christmas.
The Evening Journal will not publish on December 25 for Christmas. Historically the Journal also skips printing on Christmas and the Fourth of July as holidays.
A group of 18 Washington county farmers met at the extension office for an opening session on farm record keeping despite bad weather. Senator Carl Anderson and Mississippi Valley Farm Business association official Dean Huston spoke on the value and simple methods of keeping records plus shortcuts to start systems. Attendees included Imer Sojka, Lawrence Whisler, Raymond Whisler, T. J. Berdo, William J. Bell, Lorence W. Marek, Dean M. Luers, Dwane Shalla, Leroy W. Yessy, Edwin M. Horn, Sterling Stoltzfus, Wellman Hubert L. Freel, Eugene L. Shaver, and others. A second meeting is planned for February 5.
Des Moines reports the 1955 Iowa corn production goal is 579,945,000 bushels, 120,000,000 bushels under this year’s record harvest. The PMA notes room to add 11,000,000 acres in corn after flood-damaged land, with oats and soybean targets also listed.
Iowa forecaster reports a white chilly Christmas with new snow flurries mainly in the eastern part. Temperatures will dip to 5 to 15 above in the west and 15 to 20 in the east tonight. Friday partly cloudy and warmer. Holiday travelers find eastern highways nearly clear of ice while roads west of Boone Iowa Falls and Clear Lake remain slippery. Council Bluffs Atlantic and Shenandoah areas report partial bare roads.
The Hague The Netherlands Russian newspaper editor Pisarev 37 a Tass correspondent was detained on spy charges after being found with secret papers. Dutch contact was met on a bridge in a quiet district of The Hague where he was shadowed for weeks by Dutch and Soviet agents.
Senators Alexander Wiley and John Sparkman warned Western Europe may trigger U S aid cuts by slowing NATO base building and troop expansion. They cited a Paris NATO meeting where planned base construction was slashed and divisions reduced.

Merchants churches and civic groups seek contributions for a Jimmy Dinger Fund to cover medical costs for 12 year old Jimmy Dinger who suffered a critical head injury and has been unconscious since the October 30 accident. Parents have sold property to pay expenses and the drive is a community effort not tied to any single group.
The Defense Department reports U S battle casualties in Korea total 128,083, up 216 from last week. Includes 22,519 deaths, 92,805 wounded, 2,014 captured, 282 missing, and 1,298 previously missing returned to service. Notifications to next of kin completed for those on record through last Friday.

A Des Moines man 58 died in a head on crash between a car and a truck in Houston. His three sons were slightly injured while the truck driver W A Jackson of Houston also died. The family was visiting Neal Jr 28 a 1st lieutenant at Lake Charles La. The other sons are David 18 and George 21.
President elect Eisenhower and his advisors reportedly drafted a new strategic plan to end the Korean conflict. Details were not public but would follow lines set by Eisenhower after Korea trip. The plan seeks to deter Soviet insistence on repatriation and avoid widening the war.
Master Sergeant William H. Jones of Crawfordsville was presented a Bronze Star Medal at a unit formation on December 22. The citation notes meritorious service in Korea from November 7, 1951 to August 8, 1952 as First Sergeant of Headquarters Company, 116th Engineer Combat Group, and praises his leadership and dedication. Jones now farms near Crawfordsville and has joined the Mt. Pleasant Army Reserve after completing his Korea tour.
President Vincent Auriol asked Socialist leader Guy Mollet to form a new French government or, if he cannot satisfy, to survey and report the likely coalition. This is Mollet's second attempt after 1951.
Evelyn A. Kile, R. N., resigns from Washington County Public Health Nurse, effective January 1, after two and a half years on the staff. She will return to the University of Minnesota to complete a degree in Public Health Nursing. Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Lipscomb host Christmas guests including Ross and Rachel Galloway, Robert Galloway of Waterloo, Gresna Doty of Oelwein, and H. J. McCreedy. Galloways and Doty expected to arrive tonight.
U N forces repelled a 1000 strong Chinese assault near T-bone Hill on the West Central Front. Heavy artillery and machine guns inflicted staggering losses on the attackers, with U S Sabrejets firing on MIG-15s south of the Yalu River as part of a broader UN counteroffensive.
At West Milton New York an undetermined number of construction workers stay off the job at a submarine atomic power plant. The Schenectady Building Trades Council AFL says 40 to 50 members walked out in protest against General Dynamics Electric Boat Groton Connecticut hiring its own workers for the site.
