Fire damaged St. Mary's church in Davenport, one of the area’s oldest Catholic churches. Estimated loss $50,900 as sanctuary and altar will be rebuilt. flames started in the basement and were confined to the front of the 80 year old structure. Objects in the sanctuary were removed by firefighters.
Chairman George H. Bender said the house expenditures subcommittees uncovered evidence of nearly one billion dollars in overpayments to war contractors through Reconstruction Finance Corporation subsidiaries. He warned of gross irregularities though not asserting universal crookedness.
Madison Wisconsin December 24 acting Gov Oscar Rennebolm granted a Christmas pardon to Dr John Lewis a Presbyterian minister aged and fit who is serving a prison term for burning his church The pardon was issued today and comes as a holiday mercy measure by the state executive.
Hild former Polk county supervisor was convicted of obtaining public funds under false pretenses in Boone. A nine man, three woman jury deliberated long before a late night verdict. Sentencing set for January 31 with motion for a new trial due January 24 and possible appeal to the state supreme court.
Twenty firemen in three engines rushed to a tall box at a Detroit location. On arrival they found John Stanislaski, 54, leaning against the box and denying a fire. The crew cleared the scene after confirming there was no blaze.
Des Moines December 24. The state safety chief Jesse W. Halden warned a four day Christmas weekend could top last year's toll of 10 deaths in 268 accidents as more cars travel and weather may be worse. He urged motorists to reduce speed to visibility and road conditions. Last year's toll totaled 523 highway fatalities for 1946 with December 24 20 injuries and 2 deaths, December 25 60 injuries 26 deaths, December 26 327 injuries 1 death, December 27 87 injuries 3 deaths.

The Palestine conflict escalated with three Arabs killed in a Negev clash with Jewish settlers on Christmas Eve. Other incidents included a bomb strike on a prison truck from Jaffa to Tel Aviv, a serious injury to a Jew on the Jaffa Tel Aviv border, and a Jewish woman shot in Haifa. Both Irgun and Arab youth groups accused Britain of bias, while Jews claimed arms were allowed to flow to Arabs. A new Salameh quarter section near Jaffa Tel Aviv saw renewed fighting after an Irgun attack.

In West Palm Beach a middle aged man killed his wife in a lawyer office and cut the throats of his son and two attorneys before leaping to his death. Edgar A. Hamilton and E. M. Baynes were critically injured. the boy remained in critical condition. A boy scout knife was found at the scene.
Moscow radio reported that Russia and Norway reached a trade agreement after months of negotiation, acknowledging progress on economic relations between the two nations.
