Des Moines reports the death of David F. Owens 44 a Drake University finance professor and commerce department member for 13 years. He authored the recently published book Controlling Your Personal Finances.
Charles Fischer, campaign manager for George Wilson, says he rarely seeks office and plans a Florida winter. He remains treasurer of the Town Trome Owners Mutual Insurance, noting he only made money when not holding political jobs.
Iowa State Safety Council will supply equipment at factory cost to junior school traffic cops at busy intersections near schools. White shoulder belts rain coats and hats available through Safety Council headquarters in Des Moines, Executive Secretary Phil Sproul said.
DES MOINES The roster of old persons drawing pensions in Town now numbers 1 677 will be increased to a new peak by June 39 1939 Byron G Allen superintendent of the old age pension division announced By that time nearly 55 000 pensioners will be drawing books from the estate Allen said he expects an increase of nearly 400 a month from now until mid summer next year He warned that additional legislative appropriation at least 1 300 000 will be necessary to care for town s needy aged persons.
Bloomfield May Hartwick and her brother Harry Hartwick with four others were indicted by the Davis county grand jury on perjury attempted subornation and conspiracy charges. The Hartwicks posted bonds and were freed. The indictments stem from a lawsuit by attorney E K Beckman of Ottumwa seeking to collect fees from the Hartwicks.
Mason City reports Myron Sachen 12 swallowed marbles earlier, after five years of illness. An X ray at Mercy hospital found no further marbles in his stomach or digestive tract. The boy coughed up nine glass marbles last week after his father gave vermifuge. Doctors agreed swallowed marbles would not have remained long if indeed swallowed.
Clara Smith of Kansas City arrives home this evening to spend the holiday weekend with Mr and Mrs Sidney Smith. Sevilla Bolce of Kansas City plans to arrive tomorrow for Christmas weekend with Dr and Mrs A Bolce. Charles and Charlies Welsh and C J Jungbluth households host relatives as Don Welsh and family prepare to spend the weekend. Carl Meek of Marion Ohio and Walter Meek of Detroit Michigan will visit M R Meek and relatives for over Christmas.
President Roosevelt announced the appointment of Harry L. Hopkins as secretary of commerce to succeed Daniel R. Roper. Hopkins will be sworn in tomorrow. Col. F C Harrington named WPA administrator designate with Aubrey Williams to transfer to NYA. NYA remains within WPA due to law.
Des Moines reports a lingering split from Governor Kraschel’s rally as Iowa Democrats prepare the January 7 Jackson Day dinner. Chairman E. H. Birmingham, calling Kraschel a lame duck, schedules the event while Senators Herring and Gillett and Rep. Jacobsen are expected to attend with Governor Kraschel. Harrington was the lone incumbent reelected to attend Kraschel’s meeting, and about 245 to 260 party members were present.
Iowa WPA payrolls show 31,432 workers employed, down 2,199 from mid November as Washington orders nationwide retrenchment. State Administrator George J. Keller explains reductions mirror national cuts and cover layoffs for social security eligibility, overextended projects, winter inefficiency, and dismissals for cause. About 300 to 400 former workers rejoin weekly.
Governor-elect George A. Wilson selected John D. Zug of Des Moines as private secretary at 3000 dollars yearly with work starting January 12. Zug is current news manager of the Iowa Daily Press Association. Attorney General-elect Fred D. Everett reduced assistant attorneys general to five naming District Judge John M. Rankin of Keokuk as first assistant at 4000 dollars. Helen Alcorn of Ottumwa is due to visit family for a holiday weekend.
The Y W C A held its tenth annual Christmas party with about 145 present and gifts for 169 children who could not attend. Santa distributed toys, candy, and oranges after program acts by local clubs and volunteers. The event thanked donors, the tree providers, utilities, and committee members led by Mrs. Lester Orr.
Iowa Library association seeks a 250000 appropriation to extend statewide library service through regional systems. The move targets 24th per capita library expenditure and aims to secure federal education funds, noting Iowa ranks high in production but low in library access. Ella Laughead of Long Beach is reported to be ill after a fall, and Milas Laughead is noted as born and raised in Washington.
Kenneth Carris entered the courthouse clock tower to repair the clock. The trap door locked behind him and the latch sat out of reach. After struggling and nearly sounding the alarm on the bell, he finally freed himself and escaped.
The Journal will join Washington in observing Monday December 26 as a Christmas holiday. Practically all stores and offices will be closed and no Journal will be issued that day.
Washington residents have donated 244.85 to the Christmas seal campaign supporting tuberculosis work in the county. The drive ends on Christmas day, with belated returns possible next week. Schools and other towns are also selling seals, with reports pending.
Richard Hohl of the state highway patrol expects a surge of truck drivers and chauffeurs to renew licenses for 1939. In Washington County 485 drivers are eligible and only 212 had renewed by today. Early arrivals increased the list by 32 before 10 am. Those missing renewals must reappear for examinations under state motor vehicle regulations.

Mr and Mrs Earl Salterberg and their three children five miles west of Brighton hosted a Santa night on Wednesday inviting the children to meet Santa Claus in a neighborhood gathering.
Indicted physicians Dr. Morris Fishbein and Dr. William C. Woodward, both key AMA figures, are named in a federal grand jury Sherman act case. The American Medical Association and three affiliated societies also face the charge tied to opposition to Group Health Association, a Washington cooperative for government workers. The AMA says it will devote energy to contest the indictment.
President Roosevelt completed a draft defense message asking Congress to approve over two billion dollars to modernize the army and air corps. The proposal envisions an air force of 13 000 planes, 10 000 army aircraft, and 3 000 naval aircraft as tensions with Germany rise.
Motorists faced slick Washington county highways and walks as snow from yesterday turned to a light mist and froze, making surfaces extremely slippery. A local observer noted about two inches of snow with temperatures ranging from 25 to 27 degrees in the last 24 hours.
Iowa sees limited snowfall ending yesterday with minor highway disruption. Temperatures range near normal with a high around 36 at Keokuk and a low near 22 at Sioux City. Tonight turns colder then warms for Christmas Day as weekend weather improves.
The Good Fellow Fund total for the year rises to 117.28 with 24.73 added since yesterday. The committee hopes Saturday deliveries boost the fund as baskets arrive, with stores in Washington expected to add at least 25 more.
The Senior Young People's society of the Baptist church will go caroling tonight starting from the church at 7 30 p m. Afterward they will have an oyster supper served at the church. Lucille Knox, secretary at Washington county hospital, is ill today and cannot work.
