A Marion county district court jury discharged after 36 hours of deliberation in the murder case of Matt Melia. The nine men and three women failed to reach a verdict in the shooting of his sister in law Mrs. Josephine Melia. Dates for a new trial will be set later. Melia is returned to jail.
Santa Claus will be aided by Karl W. Harker and David O'Meara as managing trustees of the Dubuque club. The club invites all needy families in Dubuque to join a Christmas day dinner with no questions asked. Last year more than 600 people were treated to the holiday feast by Harker and O'Meara.
United Press reports six Iowa fatalities from weekend crashes and accidents. Mrs. Hibbing, 46, of Calumet, and Walter Whitman, 32, of Des Moines, died in separate crashes. F B Randsford, 47, near Bedford. W P Kline, 91, of Baxter, died from injuries and a fall. Mrs. Bergman, 44, of Dubuque, died after poisoning. The Torresdahl boy was killed when a car tipped over in Decorah driveway. his brother Lester was present.
Four Washington youths were injured when a pickup skidded on a slick descent near the Marr farm west of Ainsworth. Driver Harry Fullerton, 21, suffered severe facial cuts and bruises. Don Mitchell, 21, and Harriett Reister sustained bruises and cuts. Woodrow Waggoner, about 24, had scalp wounds and a possible back injury pending X rays.
In Mt. Auburn Iowa Bob Kinney a 24 year old itinerant laborer was shot and killed by John Harris a 67 year old filling station attendant Kinney entered the station at closing time and demanded robbery Harris drew a pistol and fired striking Kinney with five of six shots The inquest ruled the shooting justifiable homicide.
Washington County is allotted a single draft quota for the next call. About 406 Iowa draftees are slated to report to Fort Omaha on January 9, 10 and 13 and Fort Des Moines on January 6, 7 and 8. Volunteer Robert Venzke of Brighton may be processed to fill the county slot once his classification and list position are confirmed. Other nearby counties’ quotas include Henry 8 and Johnson 38.
Christmas seals sales in Washington reach 409.66 with more expected before Christmas. Funds support tuberculosis control. some envelopes still unreturned. Kalona reports 35.62 in sales while West Chester schools contribute 25.68 and 17 respectively.
In a special broadcast to Italy, Prime Minister Churchill calls on Italians and the Italian army to depose Benito Mussolini. He says the English speaking world is stirred and condemns Mussolini as a criminal amid reverses in Albania and Libya.
M H Marble of Table Neok Nebraska died Sunday at 1 30 p m age 102 Funeral services will be held Thursday son Max Marble plans to attend from Washington state for the Christmas period He survived by his widow second wife son H P Marble of Las Vegas Nevada and daughter Mrs Bruce Woods of Wadsworth Texas The deceased was born in Wisconsin and once taught in Snake Hollow district near Kalona Iowa City He had lived in Nebraska nearly 0 years
Christmas morning services at St James Catholic Church include 5 30 7 7 30 9 8 30 and 9 oclock masses. Rev Robt Stack of Notre Dame will sing at 5 30 mass with a program featuring The Birthday of a King Ordinary of the Mass and Missa de Nativitate Domine selections. A 9 oclock mass choir will include Louise Barnes Betty Jean Barth Ruth Ann George Orene Trojovsky Grant Walker and Mary Lou Barth with organist. Benediction follows the final mass.
County Superintendent Lester B. Krabill said rural schools that have responded average about 47 cents more per school in total sales than last year, while several towns have not yet reported.
Nearly 200 children attended the YWCA Christmas party on Saturday afternoon at the YMCA building. Gifts included dolls, toys, books, candy and fruit amply distributed by Santa Claus after a short program featuring songs, stories, and a Camp Fire peep show.
Andy Blattner traveled to Ottumwa Sunday to take the Burlington Zephyr to Winnemucca Nevada for the funeral of his brother Will Blattner who died suddenly Saturday night at 73. Will leaves a wife four daughters and one son. He had lived in Nevada about fifty years. He visited his brother and others.
William C. Busby 75 died at his Ainsworth home Sunday morning after a stroke. Funeral at L. A. Jones funeral home Tuesday at 2 PM. He leaves widow Florence Steele and children Jesse R. Busby Roy W. Busby J L Busby and Ruth Steffen plus five grandchildren. Burial in Elm Grove cemetery. He lived most of life in Highland township with several relocations before moving to Ainsworth four years ago.
Street Commissioner A. E. Palmer and city workmen used hydrants and fire hoses to wash mud from business streets after a December thaw. They cleaned areas around the square and toward the city hall, clearing east Washington in preparation for a children's show at the State theater tomorrow.
The Jackson boys 4-H club met in the Palm Bureau office and elected officers for the coming year. Tommy Walker was named president Raymond Whister vice president Billy Foster secretary treasurer and Raymond Hell reporter. Plans to attend the Ames short course December 2931 were made with several boys intending to go. Entertainment featured pictures of the national corn husking contest and other views shown by J W Chandler county agent. Eight members were present with leader Lloyd Marek county leader John Knotek and county agent Mr Chandler.
Postmaster M C DeLong announced today that the post office will close for the holidays. The temporary shutdown affects mail handling and window services during the festive period.
Radio reports say Churchill appeals as British and Greek forces push along the coast toward Valona. Italian positions near Chimara are tested by Greek advances aided by air bombardment, with 800 troops surrendering after fierce combat on the fringe of Chimara.
The City of Los Angeles streamliner from Los Angeles to Chicago derailed four miles west of Julesburg Colorado on the Union Pacific. No serious injuries among 186 passengers though six railway officials required treatment. Eleven of eighteen cars left the rails and a sleeping car overturned. The crew cited a broken rail as the likely cause as two power units crossed. Remaining cars and passengers continued to eastern destinations after cleanup.
President Roosevelt will speak to the nation on radio from 8:30 to 9:00 p.m. CST Sunday. The White House said the talk will cover the present emergency and proposed steps to speed defenses and aid Britain, with a preview of the program for the upcoming Congress.
Christmas will be observed as a holiday at the court house with offices closed all day Wednesday.
Des Moines report says Dee 23 and Charles Wood 20, after realizing they forgot their licenses, drove home then returned to work travel when Wood’s car struck and killed Walter Whitman 32 on a downtown street. Wood was held likely for investigation.
The post office will observe hours on Wednesday Christmas Day with no mail delivery. The office will be closed all day.
