Alvin House 27 Washburn was released after 60 days on a con 2 charge tied to alimony payments. He had served one day before paying back alimony and remained jailed until the settlement was made. A shoplifter stole a 9 1 2 week old Pekingese puppy valued at $25 from Des Moines Seed Co in the downtown area.
Mrs. Violet Riley of Missouri Valley was hospitalized in critical condition after two cars traveling opposite directions struck her as she stepped from a car near Honey Creek. Sheriff Riley Nelson said a first impact sent her into a second vehicle driven by B. M. Herman of Sioux City. she suffered a crushed hip, internal injuries, and serious head injuries.
Mrs Lawrence Hays visited her newborn twins Kathryn and Karolyn at the crib. Kathryns hands felt cold prompting a rush to Broadlawns General hospital where physicians declared the baby dead. Cause undetermined but pneumonia believed.
Christmas board action frees 48 inmates including Lester Mohr age 23 of Ida Grove who received a 50 year sentence at Fort Madison state penitentiary for second degree murder in the slaying of his mother when he was 14 years old.
Keosauqua Iowa December 23 The Co C Williams furniture store was badly damaged by fire on the second floor of a two story brick building The blaze started in the ceiling and rear wall about 830 pm The Fairfield fire department assisted but local firemen kept the flames from spreading through the business district
State theater announces special news pictures from Montevideo covering the Graf Spee arrival removal of dead and wounded and the burning of the ship. The films will be sent to the State for showing next Sunday Monday and Tuesday.
The YY M C A announces special hours for Christmas with open service from two o clock Monday afternoon until seven in the evening.
Funeral services for Hugh Jones will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 30 in the Keota Federated Church.
The Goodfellows fund drive reports a total of 38.50 today with hopes contributions will meet needed totals to sustain the program into next year. Readers urged to contribute, as ongoing calls show broad-community support for delivering baskets to those in need. A full financial report will be published next week in the journal.
In Karlsruhe area a freight and a passenger train collided killing fifty and injuring thirty six near Rudolphsville. It follows a similar crash west of Berlin yesterday with 132 dead and 109 hurt. Together these two wrecks mark the seventh and eighth German rail accidents since the war began, with total deaths at 238 and serious injuries over two hundred. Local railway officials in the crash area were arrested after the collision.
Berlin reports ration cards still in place with no hope for peace by Christmas dampening spirits. The government eased limits with a few concessions including extra hose for women and a Christmas tie for men, and permission to buy an additional pound of butter and two eggs for baking.
Washington post office reports Christmas mail volume larger than last year with letters and cards about 25 percent higher via the cancelling machine. Parcels stay similar to 1938, though lighter delivery on Christmas day, lobby hours extended for delayed deliveries, and many businesses closed for Christmas.

Programs included group singing led by Mrs. Leland Carris, piano by Mrs. Richard McCleery, a recital of Christmas meaning by Leigh Soule, ballet by Ruth Michels, and a two-scene Campfire girls play The Christmas Pudding with named participants.
The driver said another vehicle forced him off the road around 2:30 this morning. His truck struck a telephone pole and lines were knocked across the road, blocking the highway until repairs could be completed.

Helsinki reports Finland has checked Russian forces on all fronts and destroyed 250 tanks in 24 days of fighting. The Polish news agency summarized the war progress, noting weather favored the Reds and presenting a counter to a Russian three week summary acknowledging difficulties but claiming some gains.
On the Karelia isthmus Finnish troops for the 17th straight day repelled Russian efforts to breach the Mannerheim line. Snow flurries hindered the assault as Russian bombers failed to hit targets. Civilians near the front hurried for Christmas shopping between air raid warnings and short store hours.
Reports from Helsinki say Soviet planes dropped pamphlets urging Finland to surrender today and threatening a heavy bombardment of Helsinki. No pamphlets had been found in Helsinki so far.
The Department of Agriculture reports American farmers received cash income from marketings and government payments totaling 7.075 billion dollars for January through November 1939, up from 6.9 billion in the same period in 1938.
The weather bureau predicted Iowa would see snow start this evening with a change to flurries tomorrow. Christmas Day was forecast to be fair and moderately cold. Positive forDes Moines and surrounding areas with expected lighter conditions by Monday.
A large barn and most contents were destroyed by fire at the Ell White farm two miles west of Columbus City. Ten cattle five horses 200 bushels of corn 300 bushels of oats and fifteen tons of Timothy and clover hay were lost. Insurance covered all. The Columbus Junction and Washington Farms Mutual fire units helped save adjacent buildings. The Whites occupy the main house. the Duncans formerly owned the property.
