Edward W. Godlove, prominent Riverside farmer, died at Mercy hospital Iowa City from coronary heart trouble shortly after 1 a m. He was 74, ill since Tuesday after visiting Riverside friends Monday. Funeral at 2 p m tomorrow at Riverside Methodist Church, Rev Veterson officiating. burial in Riverside cemetery. Born October 4 1867 on a Riverside-area farm, son of Benjamin and Eliza Godlove. He worked in Iowa City as a bank clerk before returning to farming with his father.
A roof fire traced to a chimney sparked morning flames that completely destroyed the Mose Bontrager residence near the city limits on North Iowa avenue. Firefighters fought the blaze with the Farmers' Mutual truck led by John Custer while neighbors helped remove lower floor belongings. upper rooms lost most contents. The Bontragers moved to the adjacent Little property on nearby North Marion avenue for temporary shelter.
The obituary notes Riverside farmer and longtime Methodist church trustee, Lester Godlove, died at age 70. He married Laura Brown on December 26, 1895, and they had son Marion who farms with him. Survived by sisters Nellie McConnell and Kate Lewis and brother Dr. Lester Godlove. He served on North Ridge school board for twenty years and was a director at People's Trust and Savings bank. He remained active in Riverside throughout life.
