A Washington County couple and an accompanying relative report seeing a bright, fast moving saucer with red lights and a deep humming near their Riverside home on December 6. They described a two saucer shaped craft that paused, lit briefly, and vanished, fueling their fear and eventual belief in flying saucers.
A winter storm blanketed New England with up to 16 inches of snow and more forecast. The drifting conditions slowed travel and prompted warnings in the northeast coastal states. Two deaths were reported in New England involving a lobster boat capsizing and a snowmobile crash. Boston worked to clear 14 inches of snow. Logan Airport faced delays and disruptions.
Washington County Republican Chairman Harvey Holden announced Republican Citizen Caucuses will be held in 20 locations on January 19 starting at 7 30 p m. The event aims to boost participation in the party caucus convention system with the presidential nomination process for both major parties opening the year. Caucus details include venues across townships and towns and note that participants do not need to be registered Republicans to vote in the caucuses.
President Ford plans a broad long term focus in the January 19 state of the union address. He will sign or decide on major bills including energy and common situs picketing, with a tax cut package and railroad aid also in play.
The Washington post office will be closed December 25 and January 1 for Christmas and New Year’s Day. No city or rural mail delivery on either day, and the lobby will be shut on Christmas Day. Last mail dispatch December 24 is 4:45 p.m. to allow employees to spend Christmas Eve with families.
United Press International reports eight people died in Iowa traffic accidents over the weekend, seven in multiple-death crashes. Victims include Glenn Keely of Davenport 20 and others in Bettendorf Mount Vernon Des Moines and Cedar Rapids area crashes.
The Washington County courthouse offices will be closed on December 25 and 26 per county auditor Walter Schroeder. Offices will reopen and operate normally on Monday December 29.
