Jerry Johnson of Washington begins work this week as a city hall employee filling a vacancy as radio operator and fire truck driver. Mayor Ralph Martin announced the hiring, noting Johnson is a longtime resident with a radio background.

San Francisco attorney Donald A. Zelinek wrote to 30 radio and television stations demanding equal time to oppose Army recruiting messages. He argued the industry was persuaded to air anti smoking messages to counter cigarette advertising and contended that serving in the Army is as dangerous as smoking.

A second robbery at a service station netted 420 dollars as a masked man forced a 15 year old attendant and another worker to lie on the floor and count to 200. The suspect fled on foot with cash from the till.
SAIGON VPI reports Allied intelligence expects Viet Cong to breach the Christmas cease-fire with scattered subregional attacks around Saigon. A U.S. helicopter was shot down killing eight and wounding two as combatants near the Demilitarized Zone. Copter losses total 1,432. U.S. in- theater troops rise to 472,800 with 11,800 already sent home under Nixon withdrawal plans reducing total to 434,000.
Iowa State University reported a record winter quarter enrollment starting December 5 and running through February with 18,214 students. The tally marks the ninth straight year of increases, including 12,959 men and 5,255 women, up 1,013 from last year.
Bernadette Devlin the youngest British MP was sentenced to six months in jail on three riot incitement counts and one count of riotous behavior tied to Northern Ireland inter religious clashes in Londonderry last August. Bail set at 600 dollars.
