Cedar Rapids officials announced a $30,000 Linn County fund drive to finance mass inoculations for German measles in Cedar Rapids schools with tentative dates Feb 25 and 26 1971.
A clipped memo warns county residents there are only three days left to shop. The message is unsigned and attributed to WEJ, noting urgency and urging timely purchases amid a broader supply context.
Washington reports Congress completed work on a sweeping tax reform bill. President Nixon is certain to sign, aiming to curb inflation while boosting government revenue next year. The measure raises personal exemptions, expands social security benefits, and includes a minimum tax to catch affluent earners.

The Nixon administration partially lifts the 19 year embargo on Communist China with a three point plan. Foreign subsidiaries may trade in nonstrategic goods with mainland China and US firms abroad may buy presumptive Chinese goods in Hong Kong for trade elsewhere. The $100 tourist limit is lifted and museums and universities can import mainland goods for personal use.
At U.S. District Court in Chicago the Chicago Seven trial closed the week with a shouting session as defense attorney William Kunstler grilled photographer Paul Sequera about alleged 1968 police brutality at the Democratic National Convention. Prosecutor Richard Schultz defended the case as vigorously prosecuted. Judge Julius J. Hoffman ordered marshals to quiet the room and recessed the hearing with Sequera’s testimony pending. Timothy Leary testified that two defendants feared police violence and that Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin warned against going to Chicago if violence was possible. Leary described the Youth International Party love-in and its aim to present the politics of love as an alternative to the Democrats’ politics of death. The defense contends the prosecutions of several officers were a sham.
City council minutes recorded, noting agenda items, votes, and official actions. Meeting occurred as scheduled with decisions on local matters and public requests documented for public record.
Civic groups ADA the Greater Newark Chamber of Commerce and the Urban Coalition urged Mayor Hugh J Addonizio to suspend himself from office as federal charges of extortion and income tax evasion loom. Indicted officials faced arraignment with 13 of 14 defendants pleading not guilty. A new IBM 360-20 computer was staged for Seifert stores with delivery expected in April.
