Des Moines reports show 151 fewer Towans receiving aid this month while total payments rise by 13 141. Compared to December last year, cases drop 2711 but payments increase 125 121. Current month payments total 1 531 473 averaging 30 39 per case across 60 401 cases.
The Iowa State Conservation Commission rejected the 15 million dollar Red Rock dam proposal citing wildlife and recreation losses from heavy silt deposits and arguing flood control should start at the rainfall on land rather than at the dam site.
In Burlington a habeas corpus case decided in district court grants custody of three children to their mother Mrs William Leonard. Judge E O Newell assigns the paternal grandmother Mrs George Leonard to return the children and she is jailed for contempt for not answering questions about military allotment funds.
A Friday morning blaze starting after 6 a m destroyed the Tama Picture Theater and the Benda tavern in Tama. Mayor C Carnal estimated losses at about 15000 dollars as firefighters battled the flames in subzero temperatures. The town loses its only motion picture theater.
A $10,000 damages suit brought by Iowa Southern Utilities Co against J B Weede H C Chittenden and L L Brierly was dismissed in Polk county district court for want of attention. The case grew from a receivership action filed in 1942 and tied to a 1943 start date.
United Press reports the Red Army massing a massive offensive along the eastern front from East Prussia to the Baltic, aiming to break German lines in northwestern Latvia and trap forces around Riga, with observers predicting a campaign to end the war. The attack, described as the third winter offensive, began after a deep artillery barrage and involved tens of divisions and heavy support as Soviet forces advance toward the Carpathians and potential linkups near Hungary.

Mr and Mrs Glenn Schwartz of Washington received confirmation from the war department that their son Private Willis R Schwartz was killed in action in France on Sept 22 after earlier being listed as missing. Born Feb 10 1920, he left Washington county to join the army in May 1942 serving at Fort Knox Fort Polk Camp Polk and Camp Butner before arriving in England then France. He is mourned by his parents a sister Helen Louise and adopted brother Private David Schwartz.
The McCleery-Cumming Company forms from The McCleery Company and Newman Rudolph Calendar Division Chicago. Harold W. Cumming to serve as secretary and relocate from Chicago to Washington by January 1. Dunlap named treasurer and office manager as the plant begins setup to produce George Washington and Daily Christian Guide lines.
Santa Claus visited the Y W C A Christmas tree party as 120 children with tickets gathered around a large tree. Mrs J C Holbert led carols with Beverly Brown at the piano while Mrs George Kerr presented a flannel-graph nativity. Each child received a gift and treats as volunteers funded and organized the event.
Postmaster M C DeLong reports a sharp drop in Christmas mail volume after a two week surge. Early mailing helped reduce the rush though loads for carriers and parcel post remain heavy today. Incoming mail may rebound tonight and tomorrow, but outgoing volume is near over with Christmas days three away.
About 100 B 29s launched a third heavy blow on Nagoya while American fighters pounded Luzon from new Philippine bases within 145 miles of Manila. Tokyo reported raids over Shizuka and Osaka. Mindoro airfields began operations as U S forces advance. One American plane lost. Japanese raiders heavily damaged near Mindoro.
Franklin School and Iowa rural pupils set a state mark with Grant School posting the highest per pupil milkweed pod average. Paul Hagist led with 126 bushels, lifting an eight pupil class to 138 bushels total for an average above 16 bushels per pupil.
Public Library receives a $10,000 gift from Dr. Charles R. Brown to establish the Sarah J. Brown Fund. Income will buy historical biographical and religious books and humanities titles, with $250 yearly revenue. Fund is held as a permanent library trust and administered by the library board and staff.
A bitter cold night left the thermometer at five below zero before dawn while temperatures eased slightly by morning as officials recorded the extreme. The official weather observer reported another stretch of subzero conditions across the region with some daytime moderation.

Eisenhower urged troops to turn Hitler’s gamble into defeat, amid bridgeheads across the Ourthe and heavy fighting near Stavelot and Liege.
Washington ministers will lead the Christmas service at the county home Sunday evening at 6 15. Young church members will sing carols and gifts will be distributed around a Christmas tree after the service. Dr F W Eastwood and Rev Alfred Trenary will speak and lead prayers.
