UPI reports Communist led rebels killed about 30 white men women and children in Banala and Bafwasende with at least one American and one Canadian among missing. White troops rescued 14 women in Bafwasende while Banala survivors recall brutal fear and a narrow escape for some.
U S Embassy in Saigon halted urgent talks on boosting the anti-Communist war effort while seeking a path to restore civilian government after a bloodless coup. Ambassador Taylor and Deputy Johnson met with Prime Minister Tran Van Huong and Lt General Nguyen Khanh, but did not see the new military rulers who dissolved the High National Council and arrested many members. The United States proposed a compromise transferring politicians to civilian custody and reorganizing the council, amid tensions with the Nine Young Turks who rejected releasing prisoners. The coup targeted Buddhist leaders amid ongoing riots, with reports of Buddhist activists attacked, though unconfirmed. Taylor warned the rebels that U S aid could be curtailed if political liberties were not preserved.
Three bandits wearing plastic masks bound three priests at St Anthony's Rectory before robbing a First National Bank armored truck. Loot totaled $511,000 with $1,100 taken from church funds. Bystanders and police set roadblocks. FBI joined the investigation as the suspects fled in a black 1964 auto.
James Francis Steggall, 56, former Washington and Fairfield restaurant operator, died in his sleep at his Fort Madison home on Alta Drive. He was born March 13, 1908 in Hazelton, Iowa. Funeral Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. Barr Memorial Chapel Fort Madison. burial Elm Grove Cemetery Washington at 2:30 p.m. Rev James Burkema officiating. Survived by wife Wilda Busby of Washington, two sons Donald and James, two brothers, two sisters. He was a member of Fort Madison First Methodist Church.
Wilbert Rose aged 81 died Sunday at Jefferson County Hospital in Fairfield. A Brighton resident and former Crawfordsville farmer, he will be buried in Crawfordsville Cemetery after a Tuesday funeral at Jones Funeral Home. He was born January 15, 1883 in Kirby Pennsylvania and married Alice Williams in Crawfordsville in 1912. Survivors include his wife three daughters two sons two sisters two brothers and nine grandchildren.
Mrs Ida Mae Steckley died Sunday at her home in Joetown after a four month illness. Funeral will be Wednesday at 10 am in the First Mennonite Church Iowa City with Rev A Lloyd Swartzendruber and Rev Wilbur Nachpigall presiding. Powell Funeral Home Wellman oversees arrangements. Born Kalona March 1 1895 daughter of John and Arminda Brenneman. Married Dec 12 1915 to Sam R Steckley Kalona. Survived by husband three sons Rollin Wellman Dean Mechanicsville Dale Oxford one daughter Mrs Robert Donovan Brandon four sisters Mrs Eli S Yoder Kalona Mrs Truman Erb Wellman Mrs Richard Yoder Iowa City and Mrs Harold Miller Washington three brothers Henry Johnny Keota Leroy Phoenix Ariz and 20 grandchildren.
John E. Widmer, 72, died Sunday at his home 321 North Avenue B Washington after a brief illness. Funeral services were at 10 a.m. at Jones Funeral Home with Rev. Carlyle Smith and Rev. T. A. van der Smissen officiating. Burial at Hillcrest, Brighton. Born August 25, 1892 in Alsace Lorraine, he came to the United States at four, lived in Wayland and Olds, married Mae Edwards January 30, 1920, and had resided here since 1947. Surviving are his wife, Rex Edward Widmer of Brighton, and Larry Gene Widmer, a grandson. He was a member of the Ercher Mennonite Church.
Area skaters report excellent conditions on Marr Park pond. Ice is clear smooth and thick enough for safe skating. Marr Park sits south of Highway 92 west of Ainsworth a half acre pond sheltered from wind with shoreline spots for bonfires.
Students in Washington Community School District will be dismissed at 2 30 p m Wednesday December 23 for Christmas and New Year holidays. Buses will run at 2 30 p m to take rural pupils home. Classes resume January 4 at the usual time.
A freight train plowed into a mixed passenger train near Tacotalpa Tabasco, killing at least 41 with reports up to 70 dead and 100 injured. Four Americans were among the injured including Miles Warner of Alhambra California who lost a arm and suffered leg injuries. Authorities arrested both trains crews and searched for the freight engineer Miguel Sanchez Cruz.
Martha Whittaker and Pearl Casey lead the Knights of Columbus pinochle marathon with 6490 points at round five. Second place is Mr. and Mrs. James Redlinger with 5710, followed by Mr. and Mrs. Leroy McGraw at 4570 and others in the top ten.
Johnson County Iowa selects Marshall County Holly Springs as cousin county in a two year Mississippi Support Program. Iowa City University of Iowa students faculty and Cornell College aid Marshall County Negroes with food clothing toys and loans while building credit unions and voter rights activity.
United Press International reports a quiet pre Christmas weekend on Iowa roads with only one local fatality, Des Moines resident George William Teas Jr., 45. An out of state death also occurred. Des Moines city garbage collection pauses for Christmas and New Year with two routes serviced the Saturday after each holiday.
President Johnson led a Texas ranch meeting with Labor Secretary Wirtz Interior head Udall Commerce chief Hodges and John T. Connor to review federal spending aimed at keeping next year's budget near 100 billion. Also present were Budget Director Gordon and advisor Hornig.
Harold Timmons was elected Eminent Commander of Bethlehem Commandery Knights Templar in Washington. Other officers chosen for 1965 include Rodney Davisson Generalissimo Don Birling Mair Edgar E Stewart Treasurer Paul Snakenberg Recorder. installation set after the January 15 regular meeting.
The forecast calls for fair skies with a drop in temperatures. Lows tonight range from zero in the north to 15 to 20 in the south, with highs Tuesday from the 20s in the northeast to the 30s in the southwest. Wednesday looks partly cloudy and warmer with light snow in the north.
A national weekend saw 47 deaths, 39 of them children, from home fires and accidents. Notable tragedies included Palmyra New York mother Anna Breeden and her six children, and six more children in Warren Michigan as neighbors restrained their mother. Other fatalities occurred in North Carolina, Minnesota, West Virginia, and Arkansas amid fires and highway crashes.
