The Algona North Kossuth area returns to pioneer days with prairie fires and multiple wildlife sightings. Harold Farrow reported a six wolf pack prowling a river near his property, among deer and foxes spotted in recent weeks.
A Selby Produce Co. truck spilled dressed chicks on Highway 6% one mile north of here. The driver, Leo Keller, was uninjured in the accident.
Five boys implicated in a shoplifting ring told police they learned the ropes after talking with Iowa City youths who had been stealing from stores there last September following a football game.
Davenport vote defeats installation of parking meters after six months of debate. About 100 merchants backed the plan, bids were called and all rejected.
Public assistance grants for Iowa totaling 1 793 111 were announced by the Social Security Board in Washington D C. Of this amount 1 738 560 funds old age pensions and 54 551 aids the blind for the period January 1 to March 1940.
Mrs. Marie I. Arnold of Waterloo sues Mrs. Pearl Met Lichty of Waterloo in a damage action for 3011 dollars claiming permanent leg injuries from an Aug 14 incident when Lichty allegedly struck her in the face and pushed her into a hole while watching a circus unload.
Bonus checks totaling 2421.69 were mailed to 91 employees of the Surf ballroom in Clear Lake and the Terp ballroom in Austin Minn. This marks the fourth consecutive year C J Fox, owner and operator, has given the staff a bonus.
In Des Moines the Pond family welcomes Larry Gene born Oct 16 weighing 7 pounds 6% ounces. By Nov 21 he dropped to 6 pounds due to a closed gastro intestinal opening. A repair operation was performed that day and Larry began eating regularly and gaining weight.
Federal Judge Charlies A. Dewey ruled that Woolworth Inc did not infringe Wittkowski patent for a football toy game. After an all day hearing the judge and attorneys tested the games to see how they work. Wittkowski applied in 1922 and received the patent in 1925.
Russian planes attacked ships off the Florida coast amid renewed fear of invasion. Reports indicate naval vessels were struck while coastal defenses prepared.
At a yesterday meeting held in the courthouse the Washington County Beef Producers Association was reorganized. Joe Knotek was elected president, Richard Stephens vice president, and William Zager secretary and treasurer. A 1940 feed lot tour is planned along with other activities to aid beef raisers. Rex Beresford of Iowa State College addressed the group, urging better feeding and selling to ensure success.
At the DeMolay regular meeting in the Masonite Temple Raymond Whisler was elected master counsellor Jack Mace senior counsellor and Everette Burham junior counsellor Officers will appoint others and a joint installation with the Rainbow girls set for January 7 Wendell Baker presided over the meeting and plans for a parents banquet were discussed
Three youths captured hours after stopping an interstate bus and robbing the driver and two passengers of 12 dollars. Ton Bordinski 19 and John Bristol 19 Chicago and Samuel Tarras 21 Kansas City identified as suspects. They were caught in Tiffin four miles east of the scene. the car had stolen plates. Bus driver Clift Taylor said the robbery followed a ditch rescue attempt. Passengers Carl Burnside Iowa City and Andrew Postuma Alton Illinois lost five dollars each.
The Washington fire department announces its annual firemen's ball on January 16. Tickets, sold by active members, support the sick and death fund. Committee chair Charles M. Denison leads James Casey Bob Roe Bill Brown and Claude Reister Jr. Court Hussey Orchestra to provide dance music. A large attendance is expected from Washington and beyond as a major social event.
Secretary Henry Morgenthau Jr. said he opposes additional tax increases as President Roosevelt weighs more revenue for national defense. He noted possible rises in middle brackets of estate and individual income taxes and new excise taxes.
A large crowd attended the Christmas program in the high school auditorium presented by the instrumental and vocal departments and the dramatics department. President Roosevelt ordered two United States Health Service typhus experts to Finland to direct and aid the typhus prevention and treatment effort. Both specialists are named as authorities on typhus control and care.
In a boxed birthday notice in the Swedish language paper Hufvudstadblindet the ad mocks J Stalin in Moscow by stating he would not receive a birthday gift from the Red Army. The box is a Finnish boxing custom and the ad is signed Adolf.
Olin C Wade of Wellman was arraigned before Justice of the Peace W 8 Eldridge and ordered held to the grand jury at the January term of district court on the charge of deserting his wife and child. Bonds were fixed at 500 dollars and furnished. The complainant was his wife Norma Wade.
President Roosevelt pledged to deploy army soup kitchens in Ohio if relief funds and food fail to reach all needy residents. CIO leader John Owens and United Mine Workers district president confirmed the plan, noting it echoes relief efforts during past floods.

Loyal Hufstutler, 14, living with Joan Caldwell on West Monroe street, left Monday evening to attend a basketball game and has not returned. She is about five feet tall with brown hair gray eyes and a chunky build. She wore a blue dress a green coat trimmed with brown fur green anklets and was bareheaded. Authorities and Washington friends seek her whereabouts.
A vacation covering Christmas and New Year begins for Washington public school pupils. Classes pause until Tuesday, Jan. 2, when students return. teachers also depart for homes out of town for the holidays.
The Washington county dental society held its regular meeting at the North Side cafe last night. Dr. T. J. Pease was elected president, Dr. Clarence Wyse of Wayland became vice president, and Dr. M. J. Cruise was chosen secretary treasurer and re elected. A general discussion followed dinner.
Stewart school held a full day Christmas program with fifth graders presenting The Christmas Fairy and Scrooge directed by Mrs. Ruth Lemley. The event featured student actors, a classroom musical program, and a school wide carol sing along followed by in room Christmas parties and gifts from PTA volunteers.
After the election a meeting on the upcoming year's program was held to outline plans and priorities. The session reviewed goals, assignments, and timelines for implementing proposed initiatives.
A Christmas vesper service by the junior, young people and senior choirs is set for Sunday at 4 PM. Soloists include Mrs EK DD Morrison Jr soprano John Lloyd Hughes baritone and Paul Fry harpist with Ruth Miner Iola Dittmer and Forrest Walker on antiphonal solos. Mrs George Freshwater will be pianist and Mrs Henry Shields directs and plays organ. An offering will be taken at the door.
Iowa officials report the state aid program for the blind, now 11 months old, provides benefits well above cost. Each operation costs up to 75 dollars and has restored sight for several individuals since its inauguration.
In Fort Lauderdale three submarines and at least four warships were sighted clustered off Port Everglades as a German freighter sought refuge after evading a British cruiser. Visibility from shore ranged to three to forty miles, nationality of subs unclear. Airman Ted Thompson claimed two cruisers, possibly British, were seen off the Gulf Stream.
Clif ford Parcell, 19, was brought to hospital in Brighton after a horse kicked him while he adjusted harness during wood sawing. Doctors fear possible facial fractures but expect a satisfactory recovery. Parcell is the son of Mr and Mrs John Parcell, who live on a farm three and a half miles east of Rubio.
A $400 anonymous donation was given at last Sunday's Vesper service to aid the church choir and music leaders. The gift designates $100 each for the choir director Miss Carolyn Hamilton and soloists, with funds for the organist pianist and chorus members. Additional money supports developing members' musical abilities and rewards Mrs Nichol wife of Rev William M Nichol.
Mr and Mrs R J Brandt and Beth Brandt of Ames will spend Christmas with Mrs Brandt's parents Mr and Mrs Harry Turner. Hubert Turner of Powell Wyoming will join his parents for part of the holidays.
Doctors report 22 patients await operations while nine others are under treatment. Most procedures involved cataract removal with only four operations failing. The program aims to prevent further vision impairment among regional patients.
