Divers returned to the S 4 salvage scene from the U S Falcon with operations underway and weather favorable. The Falcon lark and Mallard positioned around the wreck as pontoons were added to the Derrick Century for lifting attempts, while hopes for survivors dimmed.
In Oklahoma City a district court made permanent an injunction restraining the insurgent Oklahoma legislature from impeaching government Henry Johnston. The temporary order had been violated but observers see Johnston as the winner in the impeachment fight. A Christmas armistice appeared to have been declared.
John Applegate Jr. wins a Columbia bicycle from Curtis Publishing as a prize for his record selling Saturday Evening Posts. He led in Washington with sales of forty to fifty per week over about a year of the contest period.
The agriculture department announced that the estimated value of all crops in the United States this year is 9 percent higher than 1926, totaling 9,114,845,000 compared with 8,438,457,000 dollars last year.
In mid morning the Falcon Lark Mallard Bushnell and S s formed a tight cluster near two yellow buoys marking the fore and aft of a sunken hull about 100 feet below.
Deputy Gene Breitenbach and neighbor William Robertson found two buck deer with locked antlers on the Washington county deer range. They carefully roped and released the beasts after Robertson freed the antlers, the deer then struggled to their feet and ran off weakened yet unharmed. The event highlights open country deer living year round in the county and Breitenbach’s routine patrols.
Three Washington churches announce special Christmas music next Sunday. St James Catholic Methodist and United Presbyterian choirs tell the Christmas story in song with masses at midnight 730 and 800 am Christmas morning. The cantata The Christ Child and Star of Bethlehem are performed with organ preludes solos and choruses by named soloists and choirs. First Mass and sermon at midnight second 720 am third 800 am, all welcome.
The program before midnight mass features sacred carols led by St James Catholic Church. Selections include Jesu Bambino The Angels Song Under the Stars Silent Night and O Holy Night with offertory and Benedictus pieces in traditional arrangement by named contributors.
The Metho dist church Christmas service features Herman N Schuster leading the Saint Saens Christmas Oratorio at 5 pm with soloists Mrs Plumly Hedges Miner Dean War sher Williams Selinstar Everette Griffith Ges Louis Warren and N Schuster. The Cecelian class of forty aids the choir. Morning service includes Tours Sing O Heavens and the Hallelujah Chorus from Messiah. Afterward the Cecelian choir visits hospital patients and other groups visit the sick shutins and jail.
Moscow reports that all opposition leaders including Leon Trotsky and Gregory Zinovieff were ousted from government posts after their expulsion from the Communist Party. Former minister Smirnoff took a job as a metal lathe worker earning $25 weekly.
The YMCA announces the first basketball game of the season will be at home Friday night on the Y floor against Crawfordsville Independents. Washington likely starts Kolosick Weaver Schulty Ray Kiesey and Crone with Kiesey in reserve. Carlton Rice and Freshwaters unavailable. A curtain-raiser at 7:30 features younger high school teams captained by Kiesey and Piper. A full schedule will be set soon with home games planned when the high school team is away.
At a Monday evening De Molay session the semi annual election of officers produced Merritt McDaniel as master counselor Gail Fisher as senior counselor Charles Grayson as junior counselor Edwin Griffith as scribe and Orville Korf as treasurer A dance was planned for next week with details to follow.
Schools held Christmas exchanges and plays on the last day before vacation. Centennial staged a gift sending pageant with a mother, fairy, Santa, and a vote to send toys abroad. Lincoln and high schools held class programs, songs, and tree exchanges. Santa visited Heights with room customs and a tree.
Cincinnati bootleg king George Remus, acquitted of his wife Imogene's murder on insanity grounds, will face a sanity hearing next Tuesday before Probate Judge Wm. H. Lueders. Judge Smeders denied bail pending the test. three alienists, not from the earlier trial, will examine Remus.
Clarence Bain was elected captain of the Washington high school football team to lead the 1928 squad. He earned letters and impressed as a back with strong defense, though a 1927 injury cut his season. The informal meeting included a dinner, speeches by Supt Peet and Coach Rice, and brief remarks from Capt. Bates and Captain-elect Bain.
Los Angeles police renew the hunt for Edward Hickman after more than 40 hours of fruitless searching for the 12 year old murder suspect. The case ties Hickman to the Parker killing as Perry Parker identifies photos of the suspect and two men are questioned in connection with related theft charges.
Word reached today of the death of Frank Moore yesterday in Oskaloosa. Born and raised in this community he worked as a barber for a time. He was brother to Mrs. James Redd and leaves a sister Mrs. A G Clark of Oskaloosa. Death followed an operation for peritonitis. Funeral services will be held Thursday in Oskaloosa with many friends from this community attending.
Sam T. Donahey of Washington county Iowa has been appointed contact representative by the American Road Builders association He will report on Washington county road construction at the Cleveland road congress beginning January 9 with a special county officials session January 12 The event gathers over 25 000 road builders and marks a landmark in highway construction plans in the United States
