Provincetown mass December 20 officers and men of 21 ships fought the sea in a salvage operation for the sunken submarine S 4. faint tapping from S 8 indicated life aboard the submarine but signals faded as the morning wore on. salvors said hope depends on the weather and what they can do to assist the imprisoned crew. commander Esbarg was aboard the salvage fleet.
Lindbergh takes President Calles on a flight at Mexico City executive palace as part of a goodwill tour between Christmas and New Year. He plans to fly to Guatemala next, then Tampico to retrieve his mother’s plane. Obregon and American attache McNab join later, first flights for Calles and Obregon.
The Fox who abducted and murdered Marion Parker has been irrefutably identified as Edward Hickman a 17 year old former bank clerk employed by Marion's father Chief of Detectives Herman Cline. Police sent thousands to patrol roads out of Los Angeles as they hunted Hickman and guarded against mob violence. Fingerprints and Jones gallery pictures formed the identification with motive noted by authorities.
Washington Sunday schools including Baptist, Presbyterian United Presbyterian and Methodist churches host Christmas programs. The Presbyterian program featured a large decorated tree donated by Mr. Smous, Santa Claus, recitations, songs, and a Christm as Eve reading. the A M E church plans a Dec 24 program with songs, Scripture, solos, and a Santa welcome. A large gift will be sent to the Council Bluffs Orphanage after the events.
The Christian church Sunday school presents No Room in the Inn a Christmas pageant Friday at 7 30 pm at the church directed by Mrs L A Foss and a committee. The program will be available for publication tomorrow.
The A M E Church hosts its annual Sunday School gathering with messages, songs, and community fellowship. Members from neighboring congregations attend a program that emphasizes youth participation and charity drives.
The Sunday school Christmas program titled The Light the World by Claire R. Munns was presented in pageant form at 4:30 PM. Children enact scenes from the nativity with Joseph Mary shepherds angels and the Wise Men as hymns and readings unfold.
Children at the United Presbyterian Church enjoyed a Saturday afternoon party from 2 to 4 PM instead of a formal program. Miss Maude McCreedy led the entertainment committee with help from the girls. Refreshments were served by Mrs. Willard Wylie Mrs. Ross Coalter and Mrs. Oscar George. After games and diversions the youngsters received candy treats and donated packages to shut ins the sick and the poor, making the event a success due to the committee and the children.
Friday at 7:00 pm the Methodist church Sunday school presents Following the Star with Bethlehem scenes and a journey for the infant Jesus. The cast includes teachers W C Hedges Roy Finch Lewis Watson Jae Boy and others plus the Cecilian choir. Santa Claus will receive white gifts for the King and a children’s program follows with Mrs Eicher mother and Ruth and Patty Smith performing a special number.
A gasoline tank on the Langley aircraft carrier in San Diego exploded at 9:45 am during fueling. One man was killed and four injured. initial reports had said four killed. The motor boat on deck with four crewmen was blown into the water but all were rescued by the tender Aroostook.
Kansas City police report Edward Hickman, a Kansas City high school graduate, is linked to the Marion Parker murder in Los Angeles. Fingerprints match threats and vehicle evidence. Hickman’s past forgery and parole are noted, while witnesses identify him as the kidnapper. A nationwide search continues as public alarm and rewards rise.
Funeral services were to be held today for Alice Eliott who was killed when a passenger train struck a bobsled carrying her. Authorities quoted her father saying he believed the freight train would stop at a nearby coaling station and he drove onto the tracks.
Robert Clark and Fred Jones both of Peoria Illinois charged with assault with intent to maim for beating Sheriff Frank Smith and Officer Don McComas with revolver butts during a March 2 incident in Tama City. They were located by information from Jane Garcia who admitted attending a liquor party the night of the assault.
The Good Fellows coupon drive in Washington reports 197.50 in cash and checks and 133 money food clothing and toy coupons on file. Y's Men's Club plans two meetings tonight and tomorrow to review aid lists with local businesses and county families in need. Claude Tucker chairs the transportation committee and will arrange pickups of donated goods. detailed call schedules will be announced after the Y's Men meet.

In Cincinnati Ohio on October 6 George Remus was found not guilty of murdering his wife Imogene on the insanity ground. The jury said the defendant not guilty of murder as charged on insanity alone and Remus faces possible probate court review to prove current sanity before any release to avoid state hospital confinement.
Coach Buzz Hogan of Fostoria Ohio plans a westward tour with ten players. Five starters, each six feet tall, head to Osage for Christmas games then Washington Muscatine Cedar Rapids and Iowa City before returning home. A large Washington crowd is expected for the clash.
Fairfield defeated Mt. Pleasant 20 to 16 in the first Little Six game at Mt. Pleasant. Fairfield led 11 to 7 at halftime and 13 to 13 after three quarters before a strong final period surge. Simmons and Parry were the top scorers with three field baskets each.
In Des Moines on December 20 a movement seeks a special legislative session in late January or early February to consider a $000,000,000 state lands bond issue. Petition signatures from a majority of Senate and House members are pledged to back a special session. Senate members signed 26 and House members 50 with more pledges expected. Senator Bergman predicts 30 senators and 60+ house members will sign.
The Washington public schools will be dismissed this afternoon for a two week Christmas vacation. School work will resume on Wednesday morning, January 4.

Fred Welt proprietor of the Colenso hotel today announced he has leased the Stuart hotel on North Marion avenue from Winfield Smouse and will take possession within weeks. The Stuart will become the Colenso Annex with Ed win EK Welt in charge, expanding to about 60 rooms for 70 guests after remodeling and new furnishings. The project includes plumbing upgrades and hot and cold water in all rooms, targeting a March opening following early February turnover. The Benz house—Stuart’s former name—lies two blocks from the square on primary highway No. 1, slated for modernization to appeal to locals and travelers. Plans for further alterations will be announced later.
Mr and Mrs Norton, superintendents of the county home plan a Christmas tree for guests on Saturday evening December 24. Four big meals will be served and the decorated tree will be the highlight. People may drop gifts at McDaniel s drug store for distribution to the home guests.
