Des Moines note shows Drake University Bulldogs players Jack Humm and Joe Sotelo earning varsity letters. Humm, a guard, saw significant action, while Sotelo played defense at halfback. Both previously lettered in 1951 for Drake.
In a high scoring night Mt. Pleasant and Burlington finished 45 each as Ottumwa led Washington 45 to 35 and Ft. Madison defeated Fairfield 52 to 49. The twin ties highlighted a crowded boys basketball slate with several close rallies.
Ottumwa high school boys basketball used height to outplay Washington on their home court 45 to 35. Washington struggled with poor shooting in Ottumwa’s new gym, making only six field goals all night while Ottumwa relied on free throws for much of its scoring. Whitehead led the Demons with 11 points and Puls added 9 as Ottumwa held a 24 to 15 halftime lead.
West Chester Junior High edged Washington Juniors in a tight 35 34 victory. Butterbaugh scored 20 for West Chester while Don Embree led Washington with 16. Washington led 19 17 at halftime.
The West Chester Wellman basketball game set for Friday night was postponed due to icy road conditions.
Washington freshmen-sophomores fell 44 to 31 at Ottumwa in their last Little Six game before Christmas. They stayed competitive mainly on free throws totaling 17 points while Burl dogs earned six from the line. Embree and Fritz led with nine points each for the Demons. Pregon added nine for Ottumwa.
Kreglarz defeated Ainsworth 2 to 1 in 1869 plus 204 handicap. Kreglarz 1961 plus 189 handicap, Ainsworth 7uy0. High scorers include Culligan 22329 and Modern Appliance 2138 for team series. Ten years ago today the Sunday before Christmas, Washington churches featured special Christmas music prepared by church choirs. Directors led well and ministers contributed much time to the numbers in yesterday’s services.
The Richland boys beat Brighton 54 to 28 with four players tied for high honors at 11 points. Larry Robison led Brighton with 10 and Larry Day added nine. In the girls game Richland defeated Brighton 68 to 40 as Kate Hendrickson scored 42 for Richland and Mary Pacha had 21 for Brighton.
Varney Bros. edged Bird team 2 to 1 as Modern Appliance beat Honey Bears 2 to 1. Culligan swept Kalendar Kids 3 to 0 with high scores 2329 to 1770 plus 222 handicap. Modern Appliance 2138 Honey Bears 1770. Varney Bros 2114.

Yesterday the Kinross couple Mr and Mrs Robert Krebs welcomed a son. Today Washington couple Mr and Mrs Ted Zieg Jowsky welcomed a daughter and Mr and Mrs Lloyd Dawn welcomed a daughter. Dismissed today is Mrs Marjorie Boshart of Washington.
