Riverside Santa will arrive Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Community Building. Children may share their Christmas lists and receive a bag of treats. Chamber of Commerce members will provide the treats, with distribution planned for Friday evening.
The Mid-Prairie High School band and choruses perform at 7 30 p m today in the Wellman high school gym. The program mixes traditional and popular Christmas music with two combined selections. The alumni chorus will sing the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel’s Messiah with electronic tape accompaniment. The concert is free and open to the public.
Voters in the Nevada School District rejected a $1.96 million bond issue, receiving 791 yes and 570 no votes, falling 25 ballots short of the 60 percent threshold. Officials blamed the economy for the defeat, noting funds would have funded a high school addition, remodels, repairs, and athletic-field improvements.
A group of Adams County farmers in Stringtown dig a pit on the Jack Butler farm as they prepare a cattle shooting protest against low livestock prices and high costs. Benne Miller says they’d rather shoot than sell at a loss. No date set. Local participants include National Farmers Organization members and non-members.
Cedar Rapids police say nine people nine arrests including seven adults and two juveniles solved a two month spree of 47 break ins in Linn Johnson and Benton counties. About 87 vandalism incidents in Cedar Rapids were cleared with losses estimated near $100000 with valuables recovered. an abandoned park pavilion damage and recovered items led to the arrests. Two juveniles may be tried as adults. additional charges pending in Benton and Johnson counties.
DETROIT reports analysts estimate at least 142000 hourly workers in the U S auto industry will be laid off by end of January as car sales slump. General Motors plans 91000 indefinite layoffs next month including 16000 more than earlier planned. Chrysler plans temporary layoffs for about 20000 white collar workers.
The YWCA Rotary Christmas party drew about 90 children and several parents to the Y community room for entertainment by a high school mime group and a Santa gift distribution. Prizes were bean bag dolls by Anna Crane. candy from Perfex. meals cooked by Mary Salladay and Earl Steele. Rotary-furnished food and entertainment. and a planning committee from both organizations led by Mrs. Mike Wood and co-chair Mrs. Bill Deaton with several other members.
The Senate approved a $5 billion measure to fund 330000 public service jobs and unemployment benefits, while rejecting a $5.5 billion spending cut. The package, sent to conference for reconciliation with House fiscal 1975 measures, aims to bolster jobless relief and veterans rehabilitation benefits amid ongoing adjournment debates.
Congress approved raising interstate truck weight from 73,280 to 80,000 pounds with axle limits up to 20,000 pounds, attaching the change to a $752.8 million highway aid package. The measure passed 67-27 in the Senate and 307-67 in the House amid BIP safety and billboard bans, with President Ford's stance unspecified.

Public Works Director James Reschly outlined mortar deterioration and rough inverts found during a four quarter mile inspection by Brian Nash and John Clayton of Indiana Gunite Co. Gunite applications would smooth the interior, increase velocity, and preserve capacity. The 4,738 foot line runs from northeast to southwest, buried 10 to 12 feet underground under homes, with sections varying in size. Green Engineering Co. will present a list of sewer separation projects and a long-range underground work plan for growth to the council.
President Ford, amid protests shouting jobs, jobs, jobs, delivered a 10 minute speech at a suburban Alexandria station during the launch of the American Freedom Train. He urged unity to solve energy and economic problems while observing the train’s route through 76 cities in 48 states.
