A historical look at the Good Fellows club in Washington begun by Mr. and Mrs. J B Crail in 1917. The article recalls volunteers like Mrs Ed Grayson and Mrs Elmer Bickford, fund raising led by FE Morrison, and the shift to the Y Mens Club who continued the annual drive with Journal coupons.
The House adopted the drought relief conference report authorizing 45 million dollars without a record vote. It then approved sending the emergency unemployment relief bill back to conference by a 135 to 5 vote. Dr Charles R Brown a well known local preacher born and raised in the county will address the Sunday Evening club at Orchestra hall Chicago next Sunday evening. The talk is set for 730 pm and will be broadcast on station WMAQ. Brown has given an annual address at the club since its founding and the club continues to invite nation’s prominent speakers.
A truck bearing 1021 dressed chickens from Washington county farmers arrived in Chicago about 9 30 this morning. The poultry went to Chicago charitable societies for distribution. Mrs. Charles A. Dewees suffers from double pneumonia. It brings the Dewees family to three with pneumonia. The two small children show slight improvement. They reside at 402 West Seventh Street.
Community urged to donate dressed chickens for Christmas baskets to aid Washington residents. Prairie Flower neighbors volunteered support, and W. S. Reister & Sons offer storage for donations. Chickens may be left at the Reister plant or Gibson poultry house and distributed next Wednesday.
Coach George Freshwaters leads the Washington junior college basketball team to Muscatine for a league game against Muscatine junior college. He notes Muscatine is among the circuit’s best with additions from last year and predicts a tough contest. Ahrens is strained by illness and may only play briefly. tipoff is at eight o clock.
Prof. J A Taylor led the morning assembly with his speech class and Helen Jungbluth presenting a Christmas drama as the first part, followed by a Christmas play in the second segment. The program was well received and the cast includes Mrs Dyson, Helen Caldwell, Mr Dyson, Leonard Bridges, Evelyn Anderson, Irene Bush, Mildred McCarty, Monfort the detective, James Casey, Horatio the servant, and Gladiola Brat ten.
Sheriff elect R H McCarty names Walter Schroeder deputy to assume duties January 1. Recorder elect Mrs Minnie Green selects Mrs Juanita Wilson as deputy. Schroeder was an auditor’s assistant. Belle Rice will replace him. Mrs Wilson is a coal company office worker and former Juanita Ellis.
Fairfield high school edged Mt. Pleasant 18 to 17 after overtime. Crayne sank a decisive free throw in the extra period to break the deadlock in Fairfield.
Greensburg Pennsylvania reports the school board accepted an offer from the Naval Reserve Training station in Michigan to obtain an obsolete airplane. The aircraft will be used to instruct high school pupils in air plane mechanics.
In Tomales Bay area near San Rafael California eleven people including three families are feared drowned after two fishing launches were lost at sea. One boat reportedly capsized with nine aboard and two infants possibly aboard. A second craft with two men disappeared after rushing to aid survivors.
Audubon Iowa December 19 The state highway commission breaks its silence after low bids on 97 miles with one provisional award for primary highway 7 from Hamlin to Kimballton in Audubon county National Construction Co of Omaha tentatively won the job Cement price concerns led the panel to withhold final award while other projects remains under review with no mention of dispositions.
Slippery pavements yesterday and today forced careful driving. Early this morning two cars on South Fourth Street near Fast Washington Street had broken rear wheels from curb collisions, one on each side of the street.
President Hoover signals start for the Midwest Free Press in Muscatine Iowa as Norman Baker launches the new daily paper. The edition marks the rival to the Journal operated by the Lee Syndicate, amid Baker's cancer institute prominence and his radio broadcasts.
Washington high school seniors elected William Masson as president Raymond Witting as vice president Lucille Davison as secretary and William Shannon as treasurer. Principal Della Patton announced the results at a senior assembly after ballots were cast in economics and civics classes.
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Elwell and their two young daughters have returned to their Waterloo home following a visit with Mrs. Carrie Ellwell and Mrs. H. G. Looney. They departed with gifts including a late model electric radio from the married children and Harold.
Iowa post officials warned that many parcels mailed late will miss Christmas delivery as parcel post demand swells nationwide. Des Moines reports 100000 extra first class items mailed daily, while postmasters in several cities urge residents to mail today or tomorrow to ensure arrival before Christmas.
In Wewoka Oklahoma the No 1 Douglas gas well at the townsite pool erupted into a massive fire. Flames roared high as 60 million cubic feet of gas fed the blaze and workers battled from asbestos suits with water lines. The blast endangered the city of about 10 400 residents as crews struggled to suppress the out of control well.
Seven mothers of Valley Junction high school students meet to oppose Superintendent W. H. Meyers after a decision to move the football letter ceremony from the banquet to an assembly. Sixty students walked out in protest and six players were denied letters for participating. The assembly and letter event were scheduled for tomorrow amid further plans.
Washington county assessors met at the courthouse to discuss duties for 1931. Twenty three members attended representing every precinct except Kalona. George F. Wallace was named chairman with C. M. Livzey as secretary. Ben Hall and George Crane from the state board of assessment and review answered questions on new data sheets. The session, led by county officials, planned work starting the second Monday in January. Dr. Q. Dayton spoke on taxation, a subject he has studied for the legislature.
