Havel family brightens farm with Christmas lights

Eileen Havel and her parents near Riverside create a grand outdoor Christmas display since 1960. About 700 lights cover their rural home with a Nativity scene Santa Claus and a white illuminated fence. Music from 7 to 10 PM through December 31 adds to open houses December 16 to 31 attracting around 800 visitors over four years.

Funeral services for Mrs Elizabeth Hamilton Carson Murphy 86 of Washington County will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Jones Funeral Home with Reverends Dehne and Picken officiating. Burial in Ainsworth Cemetery. Survived by husband William. sons Samuel and James. daughters Mrs Earl Steele and Mrs Floyd Martin. 12 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Rebels attack Paulis as government fort held amid clash

In Congo near Paulis government forces including 200 troops and 47 white mercenaries fought 4,000 rebels claimed by observers to besiege the town. Casualties were reported on both sides as rebels used armored vehicles. Premier Tshombe warned in Dusseldorf of a Communist path without aid, calling for a Marshall Plan through investment.

YW Rotary Party for Children and Mothers

The Annual YWCA Rotary Christmas party for children and their mothers will be held Monday December 21 at 6:30 p.m. in the YMCA meeting room. About 120 children and 36 mothers will attend. Ainsworth will hold a Santa event at the Legion Hall on Saturday at 2 p.m. if cold weather persists. Children from Ainsworth and Cleo Orris are invited to meet Santa, with plans previously calling for streets.

President Johnson met with AFL CIO leader Meany and labor chiefs then invited fourteen corporate leaders to the White House for a one pm session. The talks touched on labor policy and the Democratic platform on right to work but Johnson gave no commitment on platform adoption.

Manpower Study Office to Close for Holidays

The Manpower Study office in Washington will be closed December 24 through December 31. Ed Emerson says the closure allows staff overtime compensation for handling traffic generated by strong local response to the study.

Interim Committee Slams Iowa Highway Commission

The Legislative Interim Committee adopted a 16 point report criticizing the Iowa Highway Commission and floated replacing it with a one man director. The panel faulted the 1963 asphalt switch on 14 miles of Interstate 80 and Johnson counties and urged ethics reforms and tighter record keeping alongside broader governance changes.

Toll May Top 20 In Fire At Maples Home Fountaintown Ind

A deadly fire at the Maples Convalescent Home in Fountaintown Indiana killed at least 16 by mid morning and a total feared 20 or more. Firefighters battled the blaze as water froze in pumper trucks and crews had to draw from Brandywine creek. Survivors, mostly elderly, were rushed to W J Major Hospital in Shelbyville with cold, smoke inhalation injuries. Local officials and residents described the scene in a cold, somber night with little sound from the victims as rescuers worked.
