Gov. Harold E. Hughes said he would favor legalized non profit bingo in Iowa if carried on properly and with a constitutional amendment. He opposed a Las Vegas type bingo and showed openness to pari mutuel betting with limits but declined to predict his veto or signature. He urged funds from pari mutuel bets go to the general fund rather than earmarked fairs.

Nine high level officials across city state and federal levels faced separate indictments on malfeasance charges involving embezzlement and bribery. The federal case in Virginia named a former McNamara aide and two Pentagon officials for misappropriation of defense funds. Illinois charged a former revenue director with accepting fees from envelope companies tied to a $2 million state contract. In Omaha, Mayor James Dworak and four others were accused of taking bribes to facilitate a luxury apartment project. The defense fund misuse, about 66 000 dollars with 12 000 recovered, was found in a Pentagon audit last fall. Arraignment was set for next Tuesday.

In Saigon the so called young turks in the South Vietnamese army moved to purge nine pro Buddhist generals, including Minh, raising fears of a new coup. The High National Council blocked the purge, fearing a strong Buddhist backlash.
