Rev. Paul K. Wells starts his ministry as pastor of the Washington Baptist church after nearly two years as an army chaplain in the Pacific theater. He, his wife and two children will move to the Baptist parsonage near Camanche Iowa where they have stayed since his discharge.
Washington county leads this session in United States savings bond purchases with first eleven months sales totaling 1 951 80, including 1 207241 in bonds and 112998 for Series F. A total above 2 000 000 is forecast, outpacing neighboring counties in per capita investment and overall totals.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce issued a critical analysis of the CIO wage case, citing William P. Jackson. He disputed Robert Nathan's report that industry could raise wages 25 percent without price increases, listing nine objections and arguing price rises would follow to cover increased pay.
Jackson cites wage trends and dividend buying power to challenge the Nathan report. He says profits as a share of national income are below prewar norms and warns against predicting 1947 profits from 1946. The reply from industry follows the Nathan findings.
Don Radda was named the 1946 Washington County winner in the DeKalb national corn crowing contest with a yield of 154.91 bushels per acre on a five acre Washington farm. The record earns him the county plaque and eligibility for state and national awards. Other notable yields include Marion Smith 142.64, Phillip Marshall 140.52, Wm. Chmelar 131.7, Walter Weston 134.84, Marion Augustine 122.49, and Chas Mayer 108.94 bushels.
Funeral services for Mrs Annie Johns were held at Federates' Presbyterian church Crawfords ville with Rev Daniel K Yerd in charge. Pallbearers named Harvey Davis David White E V Humphreys Fred Leslie and Calvin Humphreys. Music by a quartet including Mrs Howard Anderson Mrs Claire Holmes John White.
Des Moines data shows State Fire Marshal John Strehm issued a holiday safety list. Recommendations include keeping trees away from stairs and heat, avoiding candles, disposing gift wrappings promptly, supervising electric toys, and keeping a water bucket ready while contacting the fire department if a fire cannot be extinguished immediately.
Fire department responded to 516 North Second Avenue this morning. Hose filled with steam and smoke. no fire damage but rooms heavily smeared requiring extensive cleaning.
Joe Jones was buried in the Cam Brian cemetery per local obituary notices. The short report confirms burial location and the deceased's name.
Hugh Morris of Cotter near Ainsworth is named one of three feeder cattle judges for the 1947 National Western Stock Show in Denver, January 10 to 18. His recent Chicago International Show entry of six carloads of Shorthorn feeder cattle was judged the best feeder lot, selling in Chicago for about 50 dollars per hundred pounds.
In Atlanta on December 18, northern and southern Presbyterians drafted a plan to reunify the church factions that have been split since the Civil War. The four day conference produced proposals to be sent to the general assemblies next spring. Notable delegates include Dr. H. Ray Anderson of Chicago Dr. H N Morse and Dr. C T Leber of New York Dr. P. C. Payne and Dr. Henry Barraclough.
Fire in a two story Detroit rooming house killed three people and injured a fourth with four escaping unharmed. In Brooklyn Massachusetts a lodging house fire killed three including two brothers, injured six and displaced about 900 residents as flames consumed a year old brownstone with twelve apartments.
New York December 18 The American foundation estimated in a report that American workers lost $9 3 6 40 0 through strikes from September 1945 to September 1948 on an eight hour day at one dollar per hour The report notes 124 000 000 man days were lost by 6 292 000 strikers and values production costs as incalculable It cites soft coal miners losses last spring of 145 000 600 in wages and 2 000 000 000 in lost production costs
At the Legion meeting last night an auction of member donated articles raised 36 dollars. Proceeds fund gifts for veterans hospital patients. The event followed a potluck dinner with members’ wives and friends as guests. A public safety program included a safety film by W. A. Erhe and talks by Hd Polson of the state public safety department.
Veteran Gilbert Knighten hurried to finish his dream home in Tampa Pecos. He moved in furniture and clothing and even wrapped Christmas gifts before a blaze destroyed the residence. Firefighters battled the flames as authorities investigated the cause and potential insurance claims.
United Nations moved for appointment of an on the spot investigating commission representing the Big 5 Poland and Brazil to determine the cause of friction between Greece and its neighbors. The U S proposal would send investigators from the United States Britain France China Russia Poland and Brazil to probe Greek border tensions with Yugoslavia Bulgaria and Albania. They would examine charges from both sides and seek root causes across the borders.
Art Long announces purchase of Lloyd Little transfer and storage business in Omaha. James T. Bateman will partner, with Little Transfer drivers Calvin Little Earl Brown and Harold Watson joining the Long company. A closed van adds service. the firm will continue general hauling and moving household goods. Mrs. Little and two children plan to move to Washington after Christmas.
At a Washington Lodge of Odd Fellows meeting last night J M White received a jewel for fifty years of Odd Fellowship. Secretary M D Lee presented the token. White joined in Richland and has belonged to lodges in Richland Keota and Washington.
Police raided a Philadelphia narcotics bar called a shooting gallery where hypodermic needles and drug sniffs were sold like beer in taverns. Elizabeth Edwards, 34, was arrested as the proprietress and four others were taken into custody as dreamers.
A fire destroyed the Knighten residence today leaving no possessions intact. Firefighters battled the blaze but the home was a total loss with damage to surrounding property and embers spreading to nearby yard. No injuries were reported.
Iowa legislators nationwide favor a five percent liquor tax and a four to one margin for a five percent slot machine tax. A state committee recommends distributing liquor tax proceeds by population and adds a commercial amusement tax to cover gambling devices. Some call for legalization with high taxes. others doubt taxing an illegal or contested device.
Funeral services for Mrs Emma Long are announced for 2 20 Thursday afternoon at the A. A. Jones funeral home with Dr. Fred Miller in charge. Burial will be at Ainsworth cemetery. Eastern Star and White Shrine members are asked to meet at the Masonic temple at 2 10 to accompany the group to the funeral of Mrs Harry Long.
Belmont Sheriff S C Barricklow barred John Brehm from the county jail for an extended period due to repeated incidents. The action blocks Brehm from entry and custody at the facility.
Des Moines reports the coldest weather of the season gripping Town and surrounding counties. Overnight lows reached zero in Mason City with forecasts calling for little change and scattered snow flurries in the north. Daytime highs ranged from 15 to 20 in the northeast and 30 in the southeast as reported from Charles City Waterloo Cedar Rapids and Ottumwa Des Moines Oskaloosa and other towns.
Testimony in the Wilson case against Rock Island railroads covered damage to the J. Wilson estate farm after about ten acres were taken for right of way. Witnesses Harve Wilton, Joe Wolfe, and W. C. Richards testified on pre and post taking values with Richards estimating a $100 per acre drop.
The sheriff said that the arrests of Brehm, who is commonly held at the country home or district jails, were becoming a burden on the county.
Edward P. Terry former Bilbo secretary testified before a Senate war investigation subcommittee that A B Friend Bilbo campaign manager threatened his life if he revealed Bilbo war contractor ties. Terry recounted four other gifts and favors totaling thousands from war contractors including Newton Friend Knost and Morrissey.
A Southern Railroad train collided with a crowded school bus at a blind crossing near Newberry South Carolina eleven people were killed including ten high school students. Bus driver Richard Sanders 41 also died and many passengers were injured. bodies were scattered along the right of way as the train continued south to make up time.
