Orville Lee, patient at a Waterloo hospital, sustained a serious shotgun wound during a trapshoot event. Doctors expect amputation will not be required.
Lineville report notes a 2-pound infant born November 16 to Mr and Mrs Abner Davies near Lineville died after two months in an incubator at a Leon hospital. Despite early hopes for survival, the newborn passed away Saturday.
New Hampton reports stockholders of the First State Bank of Fredericksburg were repaid the final 25 percent of stock assessments from 1933, totaling $5,500.
Union and company representatives met in Sioux City to settle a strike by forty truckers at three wholesale fruit houses over wages hours and vacation privileges.
Lieutenant J J Vander Zee of the army 94th pursuit squadron from Selfridge Field Michigan struck a power line while landing an army pursuit plane at Cumberland Maryland on Sunday. He was en route from Boston to Pittsburgh but fuel ran low due to head winds. The plane was damaged but Vander Zee escaped injury.
Ottumwa curios collector O. L. Butts purchased logs found buried about four miles south of Eldon. Notches in the timber suggest pegs to some observers while others doubt their purpose. The logs’ origin remains unidentified.
About 600 Iowa farmers expected at Hotel Savery in Des Moines for the sixth Grass Roots forum. Rep Clifford Hope of Kansas, chairman of the Republican 46 member committee, will preside as Republicans seek farmer input for 1940.
Des Moines man William Harbach 71 died after a bathroom fall at a relative’s home. He reportedly struck his head and, while unconscious, turned on the hot water tap, causing fatal scalding, according to a doctor’s statement.
In Council Bluffs Acting Desk Sergeant Robert F. Edwards answers a police line. His son blurts out a word like poison, hinting his mother might be poisoned. He hurries home to find his wife and son safe, and learns the dog was poisoned.
Chet W. Eicking of Ontario California was injured in an automobile collision nine miles north of the 218 92 junction. He suffered a severely injured back and will require a two to three month cast and months longer in a brace. He was driving one car and towing another when the rear car buckled the tow hitch and climbed onto the forward machine.
Will German appeared before Justice of the Peace W. J. Eldridge after an auto collision near Ainsworth last week. He was fined five dollars and costs for operating a motor vehicle without a driver's license.
Funeral services for W. T. Marr of Ainsworth S. will be Tuesday at ten in Sherman’s funeral home with Rev. C. E. Coggeshall officiating. Burial will be in Ainsworth Cemetery. Mrs Marr, 76, injured in the crash, shows improving reports from the hospital.
A Washington fire truck responded to a blaze in a car parked on Fast Main Street. Investigators believe the fire started in the upholstery and may have been ignited by a lighted cigarette left inside the vehicle.
Seventy three chauffeurs had their licenses renewed for 1940 after applying and passing vision tests during a Friday session with the state highway patrol. An oversight left no record of the tests at the sheriff’s office, and city police were alerted about a driver’s license issue following a collision with an engine.
Finnish troops scored a key gain on the Mannerheim line driving Russian forces back across the Talsta le river. The Red Army had held a bend between Lake Ladoga and Lake Uvanto, but today the Finns relieved pressure on their main forces at the river mouth on Lake Ladoga.
Noted New York columnist and American Newspaper Guild president Heywood Broun died this morning of pneumonia. Born in Brooklyn, Broun began his 30 years of newspaper career in New York in 1910.
Robbers entered the Beehive ladies shop in Davenport last night through a window and stole 1500 dollars in cash plus ten fur coats and two diamond rings. Police reported money hid in a bookcase with books scattered across the floor.
Rex Beresford of Iowa State college will speak to beef producers at a meeting in the G. A. R. room of the courthouse. The event starts at 1 30 p m and ends around four o’clock with discussions on beef production outlook and prices, cattle types to raise, and questions about rations and feeding.
A week ago the award or grant was recorded as going to Twila Man Gold of Keota instead of Don Mangold. Examiners left the record unclear and unresolved.
Postmaster M. C. DeLong reports the pre Christmas activity starting last Friday with a surge in mail placed for delivery and a flood of Christmas parcels today. Three extra workers were added this morning to handle parcel post and square deliveries as the rush is expected to grow daily despite unseasonably warm weather.
More than 1,000 children aged 4 to 14 filled the South Side Community center for Des Moines public Christmas celebration. A 200-member Citizens Committee organized music, a play, gift presentations, and Santa’s distribution of stockings with oranges walnuts candy and other items.
Audubon County Sheriff Fren Clemmensen named in a 10250 damage suit filed this week by John F. Drew of Des Moines through E. J. Drew the minor plaintiff alleging false imprisonment. Plaintiff seeks 5250 actual damages and 5000 exemplary damages claiming unlawful imprisonment and wrongful criminal complaint. The action also seeks to establish paternity of a child born in September to Evelyn Shepherd.
Mrs Roy Randall who had a major operation at Mercy hospital Iowa City was brought home last week and is getting along very well.
Commodore H. H. Harwood commands the Exeter and directs South Atlantic operations after his ship sustained heavy damage in battle with the Graf Spee. He continues to pursue the pocket battleship despite setbacks.
Dan Turner former Iowa governor told a Republican committee that US farmers are increasingly dependent on government policy and price fixing for major crops. He spoke at a Midwest agriculture forum to outline desired 1940 legislation.
Members of the Foursquare Gospel church presented a birthday gift to their pastor Rev W J Stevens during Bible school led by Superintendent fester Lease. The gift included a Thomson chain reference Bible and a purse of money hidden in places around the table prompting the pastor to find specific scripture passages. Attendance at Bible School was 185 yesterday morning.
A large audience enjoyed the Christmas vesper service by the United Presbyterian choir directed by Carolyn Hamilton. The cantata The Babe of Bethlehem by Harvey B. Gaul received strong, nuanced performances from soloists Donald Dean Dawson Ottumwa and John Charles Moses Ottumwa along with Iowa City guest Alexander Ellett and the women’s chorus from Iowa City. Helen Harvey and Mrs Richard McCleery provided piano and organ accompaniment and Donald Benblossom arranged the festive decorations. Reverend William M Nichol delivered invocation scripture and benediction.
Karl W. Fischer state commissioner of public safety estimated the new Iowa truck law would raise state revenue by 250000 dollars in 1940. He based the figure on six weeks of highway patrol scale tests and discussions with other states on reciprocity for truck licenses.
Berlin reports the largest air battle of the war over North Sea bases with 34 of 44 British planes shot down. Danish residents observed five hours of fighting near Sylt, with at least 14 bombs dropped. British raids also hit Hoernam in Jutland as German losses claimed. London admitted ships bombed and two sunk. A separate notice said a British submarine sank a German cruiser after torpedoing another.

An ammonia tank explosion damaged Morrett packing plant in Ottumwa causing a temporary loss of light power and steam. Operations resumed by 10 a.m. after initial damage, with Jesse Albright suffering a burned arm and other workers escaping unharmed.
