Washington firefighters receive pocket devices that alert them to alarms at city hall. The system, usable up to eight miles, replaces the city siren. A 20 second dispatcher message follows the alert. Fire Chief Lew McFadden presented the device to the city council Monday night.
Veteran officer Jack Cherry concludes his final day on Wednesday before December vacation and retirement at year end. Ken Bauer succeeds him after taking the oath of office at a Washington City Council meeting Monday night.
Motorists planning to renew this month must take tests by Wednesday as the last opportunity before January 8. Examiner services pause for holidays with no renewals at Washington City Hall until after the year. Licenses can be renewed at the city fire station 10 a.m. to 4 15 p.m. on Wednesdays only.
About 300 county engineers attended the annual County Engineers Conference at Iowa State University in Ames. A. L. Heeren of Forest City won Engineer of the Year. C. K. Paulson of Des Moines County received the past president's award.
UPI reports Agriculture Department economists foresee fertilizer prices rising 10 to 15 percent in spring 1975, a softer rise after the 1974 surge. Demand may grow as farmers plan more corn and wheat planting, with nitrogen, potash, and phosphorous use set to rise despite mixed gains in nitrogen and potash.
City Council approved buying the old Highway Commission garage site on North Sixth Avenue for 12 000 dollars and ordered the land appraised. The East Tennessee Natural Gas Co reduced supplies by about 40 percent affecting nearly all customers including ALCOA a major industrial user.
Investigators report DeWitt not guilty of murder in the Dec 1 killing. still awaiting official confirmation. In a separate development, Earl Weeks is jailed in Muscatine on first degree murder charges connected to the case. Greene County authorities claim definite proof DeWitt was in Washington County at the time. County Attorney says release depends on Judge Bainter rescinding a 30 day hold.
