The Atomic Energy Commission chose Weston Illinois as the site for a $375 million 200 BeV atom smasher. Construction would take eight years with about 1200 workers on site annually. After completion about 2300 workers would be employed and the operating budget estimated at $60 million yearly.
United Press International reports at least 26 people died in fires and auto crashes nationwide. Fires killed multiple families including four children and their father in Pittsburgh while other disasters struck Nyack New York Scituate Massachusetts and a Texas University of Texas car crash near Brookshire. A Miami collision left five dead and a Winston Salem crash killed five with one injured. Ohio road crashes near Miller City and Columbus added to the toll.
Brig. Gen. Lacy Van Buren Murrow 62, brother of Edward Murrow, was found dead from a 12 gauge shotgun in his Lord Baltimore Hotel room. A note cited illness and dependence. he had checked in Thursday night and was alive at 9:30 Friday morning. He lived in Washington. survived by wife and brother Dewey J. Murrow. Murrow had a defense and business career, with World War I and Korean War service, over 4,000 hours as a command pilot, and roles with the Association of American Railroads and the Hoover Commission. He commanded at Atterbury AFB in Indiana from 1951 for two years.
A tentative White House invitation seeks a Johnson meeting with Democratic governors following a mutinous outbreak over anti Johnson sentiment sparked by November gains. Harold E Hughes said the talks would likely occur after Christmas as the conference winds down its two day sessions on strengthening state roles in the federal system.
In Pittsburgh a family tragedy unfolded when a fire swept through a small frame house killing Ronald Schiller 35 and his four children Ronald Jr 7 Michael 5 Suzan 3 and Teresa 2. Mrs Ethel Schiller 25 four months pregnant escaped by leaping from an attic window and was treated for burns and smoke inhalation. Firemen suspect faulty wiring started the blaze in the father's bedroom.
UPI reports Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge told newsmen after a White House policy meeting that peace talks may not come soon and a larger American role in combat could precede a settlement. He cited possible deployment in the Mekong Delta, noted mixed signs on military progress, and urged cautious moves to avoid alienating locals while pursuing a prolonged truce.
The Towa Taxpayers Association opposes any tax increase by the 1967 Iowa Legislature. It calls for using surplus funds for capital improvements, ties operating budget growth to revenue gains, and favors property tax credits if state aid to schools rises. It urges state funds cover area vocational school costs and supports county-level consolidations and optional government forms.

In Lincoln Nebraska a gun battle during an arrest at a downtown motel left three men dead including veteran detective Frank Soukup. Ronald Myers and Donald Rodgers, both from Sacramento, were killed as officers questioned six suspects in a check forgery ring. Detectives Paul Jacobson and Roger La Page shot Rodgers after he fired on Soukup. Two suspects remained in custody. others questioned refused to answer.
A four member Iowa legislative panel at the 32nd annual Iowa Taxpayers Association meeting in Des Moines debated the state surplus and tax revision. Leaders Frommelt Rigler Millen and Gannon eyed nonrecurring capital spending and potential shorter sessions while noting road funding needs and education cost trends. Rigler predicted a leaner session with early committee appointments and no guaranteed tax increases.
Two New York City women, Sheila Lucille Holmes and May Holmes, both 24, were arrested in Council Bluffs on charges they persuaded a 79 year old woman to withdraw 6000 from her bank. They claimed an attorney valued a found package at 20000 and promised a split after six months. The victim, shopping in Omaha, met the sisters who drove her to the bank. The bank could not supply 6000 cash.
Britain secured a favorable outcome by winning selective sanctions and supporting mandatory UN export and oil bans on Rhodesia. Black African nations lament loopholes and consider ways to press South Africa and Portugal to comply with the first ever mandatory sanctions order.
United Press International reports Iowa will see partly cloudy skies, turning colder tonight and Sunday. Lows drop to the 20s, with Sunday highs in the upper 30s in the northeast and 40s elsewhere.
Taxpayers face a likely tax bill over 100000 from Crane Co forthcoming Washington manufacturing plant. After a December 28 voter approval of a 10 million revenue bond, Carlton D. Beh Co will handle sale, enabling engineering and planning to begin. Plant completion and 200 jobs rise will take time, tax revenue spread among city and county per law.
The opening of a plant hiring 200 employees will not upset the local economy. Construction and gradual hiring means the community will adjust. Benefits outweigh minor adjustments, and employment will ramp up over time.
